Moving back to UK soon with my family and have checked the broadband availability in our house there (don't have phone line yet but checked using previous occupant's number). The download speed seems to be no more than 1.5 MB. Am I right in thinking this is pretty slow?
We aren't heavy users but with 3 teenagers and husband working from home 2 days a week, I would like to get broadband which is reliable and as fast as is possible in that area.
I'm very much a novice at this, but could you tell me whether it is worth my while looking at different ISP's and packages (am considering Be Value) or is that 1.5 download speed going to be as good as we can get with anybody? In that case, presumably not worth paying for speeds up to 8MB?

Did you check samknows?0

1.5MBps would qualify as an 'up to 8MB service'. Anything over 512KBps qualifies as broadband in the UK.
Totally depends what exchange you are on as to what speeds you can get, the figure you give indicates that you are not very near the exchange. samknows is your best source for research, that will tell you if the exchange is ADSL2+ enabled and what LLU operators are available there. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thank you for your suggestions. Yes, samknows said 1.5, but I'm not sure whether all the suppliers listed will actually give us that speed or whether some give a better service than others. My neighbour is with Tiscali but says she never even gets close to the promised speeds.0

That is Tiscali, the worst UK ISP
If you go with LLU on an up to 24Mb package, it is possible to get a higher speed, but as always it depends on your line length0
