advice please supnded from eBay before I got on

I am a respectable 51 year old mum who makes curtains. I applied to get an eBay account and was told I was suspended before i had even started. (due to similarity of details between me and my darling son.I let him use my bank account for his eBay selling but didnt realise he was copying games and selling them). It transpires he also used my name to carry on when suspended. He is now a grown up computer student and doesnt use my computer.
I don't care if my son never sees an eBay site again but it seems unfair on me.
I have emailed round in circles, faxed passport copies, sent passport copies. I even sent the last lot of details by registered post but have just found out that these details are, more likely to end up being used against my credit ratings.I have never done anything illegal in my life (that I can remember!) I just want to sell some home made curtain sundries. What can I do.

The problem you have is when eBay ban someone they will often close all accounts that are or have been accessed from the same computer, usually meaning all family members accounts, also if you are now banned, if someone totally unrelated was to come around to your house and access their account from your computer then they can expect to be banned as well.

There are some simple steps that can be taken to disassociate yourself from someone within your family or others that share your computer to enable you to have a totally independent eBay account.

However while not in anyway illegal or against eBay policy the information could be beneficial to scammers so i am cautious about posting it in an open forum as i have no desire to assist those types of people.
  • Just install an IP masking programme and register using an alternative address and email.

  • Thanks cyril. I think i know what you mean. but if i do these things i thought it was against ebay policy because i am trying to set up an account while i have been banned.

well if you specifically have been banned for something you did then yes it is.

But if someone used your account to break the rules without you knowing what they were doing, i don't see the harm myself.

I had a similar problem last month and sent ebay my driving licence and bank statement (as they requested) and they reinstated my account.

Not sure if this is what SBC meant but there's this:
    http://hotspotshield.com/
We use it when we need to pretend to be American for any reason :o
It's annoying, adverty and slow though...
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

In this case though it will show that the banned person is the same person trying to trade again. The OP says that her son used 'her' account, therefore ebay will be quite right in thinking there is a good chance it is the same person.

This is a family matter really, not an ebay one. If ebay allowed banned sellers to turn round and say it wasn't me, it was someone using my details so please let me open another account the buyers would soon object that having sellers banned served no purpose.

I realise this doesn't help the OP at all and it must be frustrating to be hit with a ban when the only thing done wrong was to trust someone she ought to be able to trust. There is a chance they will relent if a long time has passed or if the OP phones and grovels a bit , but I don't think this is going to be easy as it isn''t a case that just the IP is the same, the whole name and bank details will be identical as well. Son did not trade as himself, he traded using his mothers bank account therefore he traded as her.

Can you think of any other organisation in this country or indeed the western world which uses collective punishment so openly?

no need to install an IP masking program, just restart your router and your ISP should give you a different address via DHCP (unless you pay extra for a static IP that is)

as i said above, you just need to restart your router to get a new ip address
