The off the shelf computer market isn't just polarised though. Not all computers fall into the 'expensive' or 'cheap' category.
True, but when you look at the volume of sales, the cheaper the better. You don't even get a reinstallation CD nowadays a lot of the time. They're down to cutting pennies off the cost.Likewise with software, whilst the OSC has produced a lot of functional software, when you start comparing key software titles with the paid for equivalent then the paid for is light years ahead in design and function, i.e. Open Office vs. Microsoft Office.
I would probably have to agree. I keep hearing people say GIMP is as good as Photoshop.
Sorry, it's not.0 -

... The applet problem is solved when I use chrome. It seems I spoke too soon, applets will not open now.

But with photoshop, office etc, it may not be as good, but it's good enough for what people want to do. A mac mini isn't as good as a mac pro, but it's good enough for most people. Photoshop is undoubtedly very good, as is the entire CS collection. That said, for a lot of people, it's more than they ever want.I would probably have to agree. I keep hearing people say GIMP is as good as Photoshop.
Sorry, it's not.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0 -

Very true. It never fails to surprise me how people buy the cheapest things they can then get perplexed when they break so soon.I would probably have to agree. I keep hearing people say GIMP is as good as Photoshop.

Once again, a good point. The people who make such claims are those who do very basic things in the programs and don't venture into what sets the products apart, so no wonder they seem them as good as.0 -
A quick search seems to bring up the Yahoo app is actually pretty dodgy and problems occur across every brower.
try re-installing Java and the yahoo app itself.
or try the suggestions on this page http://www.java.com/en/download/help/yahoo.xml0 -

It's a fact that new stuff never works properly. I got my first job in IT in 1971 working with IBM mainframes.
In the nearly 40 years since I've seen many new technologies released and get adopted by business but by the time the bugs with one are almost ironed out it is obsolete and the next new thing is being developed to replace it.
Meanwhile deep in the bowels of the corporate empires those boring old obsolete mainframes are still chugging away running the core business functions and I'm still picking up contracts for working with them
Lord only knows what happens when I and others from my generation finally retire - nobody will know how to run the boring obsolete mainframe stuff and none of the new fangled bells and whistles rubbish ever replaced them because none of it actually works properly.0 -

Oh, don't get me wrong. GIMP is great, and I hope it prospers forever. But Photoshop it isn't.Very true. It never fails to surprise me how people buy the cheapest things they can then get perplexed when they break so soon.
It makes me wonder what else computer manufacturers are cutting corners on.0 -
I have managed to avoid Windows Vista so am thankfully free from that disaster but still suffer many problems with Internet Explorer 8 one of which is not being able to access Yahoo Games Applets. I am of course at fault for upgrading from IE 7; lesson learned, NEVER UPGRADE.
Surely if you delete IE8 it will automatically go back to IE7, I still use IE6, I prefer it to IE7.0 -
Surprised no one's jumped in and told you to: "Dump Windows and install Ubuntu"...
Oh Drat! I just did....
