the journey to sort out our broadband

Just done a test at http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ and this is our result. Am I right to think this is good ? Test took 2 minutes to do. I'm using wireless connection.

Other Half attempted same test ran from his computer last night and it just hung. He's connected to router via a cable (dont ask me which one or sort, lol)
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: help.jpg -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6315 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP. If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Those results look very good. You are syncing at nearly the maximum, so you must be quite close to the exchange and your profile of 7mb reflects this, giving you a speed of 6.315mb.
What is your normal surfing like? any probs with speed, do you download anything, if so at what speed?

I just do websites and checking emails.

OH does gaming, streaming etc etc but is finding it frustrating as movies dont stream properly, games get very laggy etc.

He does have a problem with a hdd***.sys (or something like that) file causing his computer to crash quite a lot though. He's tried to fix it but its still happening.

I'm wondering if the ISP has throttled speeds at certain times. OH is normally online from 6pm till 1am

The times you quote are peak times so the number of people using the net will mostly cause some slowing down.
As regards throttling, it depends what sort of package you are on and which ISP. Obviously you get what you pay for so this is more likely to happen on a cheaper provider.

If the phone line is crackly, then log this with BT. Dont' mention the braodband - just get them to treat it as a line problem.

If you use speedtest.net your results will automatically be saved for your IP address. A lot quicker than using the BT speedtester and you don't have to wait 3 (?) hours in between testing.

A speed of 3.709mb with a profile of 7mb is quite low. I suspect the noise on the line is affecting the speed and your profile could well drop to reflect this. Is the crackling there all the time? If so it may be best to report it as a voice fault, but first make sure your end is OK by plugging in to the test socket of the line box.
Your OP showing aspeed of 6mb perhaps shows the noise is not permanent and would make diagnosis more difficult. I have heard that if BT Openreach attend and no fault is present then a charge could apply.
I would not think that extending the contract would affect the service as I doubt if any physical work was carried out.

    Hi cally6008,

If the line is crackly when the broadband is on can you let me know whether you have microfilters on all your phone sockets?

You can test your line for faults by doing the checks available here:

    http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_adp.php?p_faqid=9818&p_sid=8J1YYgyj&p_lva=&cat_lvl1=345&cat_lvl2=353&cat_lvl3=374&p_cv=3.374&p_cats=345%2C353%2C374

And you can test and log a line fault online at http://www.bt.com/fault

BT Total Broadband Option 3 customers get unlimited download usage but speeds may be restricted at peak times, especially if your OH is downloading/uploading large files during those times.

If the problem persists feel free to drop me a PM and I'll take a look at your account.

    Cheers,

    Stephanie
