Any MAC code needed when moving & changing number & ISP?

Hi
I am moving house in a couple of days. I have arranged transfer of my BT telephone line but have been told that I can' t take my number with me as on a different telephone exchange.
Broadband was also mentioned and this interests as it might be time to ditch AOL who have been a complete pain. I am also out of contract with them.
I was told I would need to obtain my MAC code if I wanted the BT Broadband.
As I am changing phone number, is the MAC code still a requirement ie is it specific to an actual phone number or is it actually specific to me? If relative to the number, would I need to ask the current occupiers of the property that we are moving into to obtain a code or would the broadband enablement cancel on the line when they move out which could allow me to start afresh?
Hope this makes sense!

MAC code is for migrating to another ISP on the same number, not for a house move.
Current occupiers need to cancel their own service when they move out, otherwise there will be a tag on the line, and you will be unable to get any broadband service there without a delay while the the tag is removed. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks for response,
So, as I am not keeping the same number, I wouldn't need to worry about the MAC code, I could just cancel my current AOL contract and start afresh with the new address (obviously with the possible need to get any existing tag removed)??
Have I understood that properly?0 -
Yes but you should check with your new supplier to be sure.No free lunch, and no free laptop
