Reasonably priced August quietish holiday

Hi everyone!

As my wife's a teacher, we have to take holidays during the school holidays which is an absolute pain trying to find something reasonably priced.

We're young (mid 20's) and like to visit places with a good mix of sun, culture, history and nice food. We're not really the clubbing, out all night types! (Last year we went to Lindos, Rhodes, and that was perfect for us)

Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced holidays- we're looking at 7 nights departing 10th-13th August. Budget is ideally in the £300 to £500 each kind of range.

Any advice, pointers towards deals etc would be much appreciated!

You could look at thomson hotel only or expedia or travel republic and then look for flights separately with a budget airline. Probably better to find flights first. This is my second year teaching and I find prices in the school ols extortionate.
I don't know how you feel about tents but some of my teacher friends swear by ready erected tent sites in France, Holland etc.

One of the smaller resorts in Turkey may be? We went to Dalyan last year, only 25 minutes from the airport but is a smallish resort with different nationalities. Its scenic with the rock tombs across the river which are lit up at night while you dine al fresco. Plenty to see and do too with Fethiye and Gocek nearby.

sun, culture, history and nice food.

France??? I'm a little prejudiced here, as a French teacher!:D

Quite good guides to regions on http://www.francemag.com/

    Book a gite via http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites

Ferry, or eurotunnel, or perhaps fly.

We've recently been to Marseilles, also the Loire Valley, the Ardennes (not very touristy, champagne very nice!), and Normandy, as well as a mini break to Carcassonne.

  • How about Scandanavia. I always go to Denmark (family there) I absolutely love it. Cheap flights from Stansted or Birmingham to Billund. Anywhere on Funen is lovley. the weather is much the same as here. I have been there one summer when it got 40 degrees but that was not usual.
Nearly all the Danes can speak English so you don't have to be worried about being lost.
Odense city (well we would call it a town) has interesting shops, coffee houses and bars. A zoo, the Danish living history museum, the train museum, where you can build lego tracks on huge tables. Yes I know you are not kids but neither were all our group.
there are loads of castles and lovely quiet seaside towns and empty beaches.

I loved Sorrento when I was in my 20s....lovely food (fish, pasta etc..) lots of culture via the Circumvesuviana trains to Pompeii, Vesuvius etc, sun, and at the time very reasonable prices. Still looks lovely now....sigh... but as we are now 2.4 children'd we can't afford it.

Hotels out of town (up the hill) were quieter - the centre of Sorrento was roaringly noisy with Vespas.

Not a place suggestion as such but just to say, as a teacher, holidays in school holidays have really come down this year! At one point I had a rule of thumb that £350 would get a week somewhere hot (basic b&B package) but there are lots about for quite a bit less than that.

Try Olympicholidays or thomas cook or thomson. All have got nice packages if you can't be bothered to book seperately.

Personally I like a greek island or I've got addicted to cruises as you get to see so many places within the week. If you left it you could get one for about £500 depedning on where you fly from. And let you wife know that there usually aren't too many kids on board!

Talking of kids, any teachers out there beat this? - went on girly hol at easter and lo and behold a year 12 & 9 were on our flight(with their mum and dad - nice family btw!)....in our resort...on our transfer coach  Thank God we didn't see them in the week!:j
Always on the hunt for a bargain.

Thanks egyptiangirl! I'm not too keen on cruises, but did love Lindos in Rhodes last year... just conscious that everything in Greece is going to seem expensive because of the euro!
