Oh thank god someone found it. Well done reetnproper, my head is spinning looking at birds feathers for hours! :T:T:T:T"We all change when you think about it. Only sorry I didn't join this thread earlier !
I have spent many an hour photographing the shags on the farne islands and would recognise that plummage anywhere ! I also knew the sound of the corncrake, trying to track down the callings on the isle of mull !!!0 -
Sorry to put another spanner in the works, but I'm not sure if the Adder is the correct answer for Britain's only poisonous snake. It is Britain's only venomous snake, i.e. their venom is dangerous. Poisonous means harmful when eaten and that would be the Grass Snake. It was on QI once! Wiki explains it here:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venom
I think I shall put both lol!0 -
Thanks Jaffa pig - We're getting a tool kit and I'm running out of family to enter this comp!
Agree with the definition of poisonous/venomous - and that they should be more accurate with their wording, but I thought all snakes were edible, if prepared properly
(or if Bear Grylls is eating them!)
Can you post a link to something that says Grass snakes are poisonous, if you find one, please, so that people can decide which answer to give?
I'll update the OP in the meantime and leave it for people to decide

I would have to disagrre with you there Jaffa Pig !
I am pretty sure they would be asking which british snake is poisonous if it bites you, not if you eat it !
see here
"The Adder (Vipera berus) is Britain’s only poisonous snake "....
also considering that grass snakes are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 from being killed, injured or sold, I doubt that they would mean poisonous if eaten !!!

Melli I'll have a look and see if I can find anything on the internet about grass snakes being poisonous.
Zippie your quote is just another example of people using the word poisonous incorrectly and probably that's also the case with this question and the correct answer is Adder! It is widely done and I do it myself. Here's a good explanation of the difference.
"Venom is injected, by something like fangs or stings, and poison is ingested or absorbed
so if something, say a snake, is venomous, it can be handled and even eaten without any trouble, as the toxin needs to be injected to do any damage. so long as there are no open wounds or anything also, venom can actually be safely swallowed in some cases
If a toad or something it poisonous, if it bites you (not accounting for bacterial infection etc) then you'll be ok, but if you handled it or tried to eat it you'd be in trouble."
As I said the answer is probably Adder and it's just been badly worded.0 -
I think Jaffa pig's got a point there - I must admit I've never been bitten by a mushroom!
Gonna go for Adder though - thanks for all the answers.0
