Moving from O2 to Vodafone

I've never ported a number before so please bear with me for asking potentially stupid questions!
My son, previously on O2 PAYG has now got a new PAYG on Vodafone and is keen to keep his old number. Firstly, I don't know what number I need to call on O2 (I've searched their website) to get the PAC (do I need to call from his O2 mobile?)
Secondly, he's been playing with the new phone and the SIM that came with it has been registered with Vodafone. Is it OK to have done this before contacting Vodafone with the PAC? Also, if the phone is topped up in the meantime, will this credit still be available if/when the number is changed? I know he'll lose whatever credit he has with O2.
Just feeling so dense about the whole process, but I guess the first time is the hardest!

I think you probably need to do it before you get the new sim but if it's any consolation I tried to move from 02 to Vodafone and tried to port my number with a valid PAC code and they completely mucked it up. Vodafone said it was 02's fault but I was still annoyed as they did not contact me to say that the port had failed and I wasted so much time e-mailing, searching on their web site and finally ringing them, that I cancelled. Or should I say, thought I had cancelled as although I categorically told them that I wanted it cancelled nothing has come through to that effect and it was nearly 2 weeks ago. Hopeless! There are three ways to get something done; do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.0

Your vodaphone credit will remain intact, any 02 credit will be lost i think. First ring 02 to get your PAC code 4445 (25p per call via 02 sim) tell them you want to leave and require your PAC. they will text it to you. You then have 30 days to use it.
Any time within the 30 days ring voda cust services explain you want to port yor existing 02 number into voda from 02. Voda will give you a porting date, usually within 5days of you phoning,(in the meantime use up your 02 credit) On the day of the port you will lose coverage on both phones for around 2 hours.
I have ported my number 3 times now and have not had any problems
hope that helpsnever put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow0 -
