Oh look, what a surprise...an angry plumber!

Bad me, how dare I point out the obvious that plumbers are taking the mickey with their charges.

    :D

Not a plumber, just someone who understands the cost of things.

Anyway, your answer to my question for how much you would have charged (or thought reasonable) to do this job is: £____________

The cost of things? What a quaint way of excusing rip off pricing.

Let me guess you work in a similar trade that feels it neccessary to charge customers comedy hourly rates for quick fix jobs?

    Am I right?

You have to charge a hours labour whether you there 10mins or 55mins

Smaller jobs are charged at a premium price,In Edinburgh i sometimes spend 30-40mins sat in traffic in and around town before i even get to a job,I have know days where out of 8hrs i have done less than 3 hrs actual work.If i was only to charge for 3hrs at standard price i would be out of business within weeks

Small jobs (1-2hrs)are charged at £50per hour,Any less and it would not be profitable in running a small business

You are not legally obliged to charge for a full hours work if you are there for only 10 minutes, that is utter nonsense. The truth is that you choose to charge for a full hours work.

So plumbers and the like are the only people who have to drive to work and get stuck in traffic?

No doubt there are also days where you get 8hrs pay for less than 2hrs actual work ( 8 x 10min jobs). I suspect you complain less on those days?

    Whos complaining?

If i was to charge per minute at the rate of £50p/h and i was there 10mins my bill would be £8.33....My van weighs approx 2.5 tonne with the materials i carry £8.33 wouldnt cover my fuel to get there never mind back.We have to make a resonable living AND show PROFIT,If not we might aswell be employed by others where we switch on at 8 and off at 4.30!

Its standard practice to charge per hour for the 1st then either full or half hours for rest

Plumbers rates of pay are not high,A structual engineer can charge approx £200-£250 p/h.

  • As you guessed I'm a Locksmith and Carpenter.
When called out to very West Wales I have to charge for traveling,

As once I traveled for over an hour to Fishguard, the actuall job took me 10 mins to gain entry. from turning off the engine, gain entry, write out invoice, starting engine up again to go home. another 70 odd mins traveling home.

Thats 2 & 1/2 hours total but only say 5 mins actuall work. Fuel alone would've cost £30.
If i had charged just 5 mins for the work I would've had £3.75
£45 per hour, Min 1 hour charge and payable every 30mins thereafter plus locks/materials. No call out charge and no vat
    sometimes I think I'm cheap. :-S
  • at the time of day, I'd expect to charge (or pay) at least £40 plus parts so that is a fair price - and no, I'm not a plumber.
  • It seems completely reasonable to me. You cannot expect a skilled tradesman to drop everything, travel and save the day for a drink.

I took the dogs to the vet the other day with severe vomiting and it cost me £60 to make her better. She was only with the vet 5 mins but I appreciate the job he did and IMO it was well worth the cash as he did something I couldn't do - fixed the problem. Same principle.

Whats with some people, if you want to pay peanuts employ monkeys.
