clairestelle wrote:Does anyone on this thread know whether i am entitled to another student loan? I took a degree ten years ago and took out a student loan for each of the three years. As I have never earned enough money I have deferred repayment. I am returning to university this October on another course and need funding. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The new student funding regulations mean that unless you are planning to study something like medicine, vet science, or architecture, you cannot get another student loan and you cannot get a fee loan either. You will need to pay £3000 fees each year and find your own living costs as well. Do you really need to do another degree as it is going to cost you a fortune?"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0 -
Hi folks,
I've recently started working at one of the SLC's callcentres in Glasgow and deal with the deferment of the mortgage-style loans. They told me the other day that they don't need me any more so I am on the lookout for a new job. Anyway, I figured that since I have a lot of info about it it could be of use here.
Ask away and I'll do what I can to help - unfortunately I don't know much about applying for loans or the ICR loans - the only thing I know is I owe them £14,000!! Eeek!0 -
BTW all SLC phone numbers are national rate (6p/min?) and the local number for the ICR (that is, loans taken out after 97) is 0141 204 5605. If you are abroad, you can call the switchboard on 0141 306 2000 and get them to put you through to save on call charges.0

...started new thread to try and avoid confusion. Too late for that I fear though.0

My DH owes about £6000 to the the SLC. They are demanding money despite us having sent in a letter from the doctor and other info showing that he is not fit for work and might never be again. The reason they want the money is because while we were homeless, my DH forgot to fill in a deferrment form. I want to know why the SLC is being so god damned nasty about this. We can barely cope as it is.
We are desperate.0 -
When I applied for my loan Iwas told over the phone by an advisor that I would not have to pay my 3000 tution fees because of my household income. When I recieved my statement this week it said that I will have to pay the 3000 back to slc along with my maintenance loan. Is that correct? Why did the girl tell me this if it wasn't true???
I wouldn't of applied to uni if I thought I would incur such debt 7000 in my first year. How does this new system encourage not so priviliged young adults to take up higher education.Hanging with the *****'s dont pay da bills
And being broke at 30 give this king da chills0 -
If you are a student starting in September regulated fees will be set at £3,000 for full-time undergrad students. New students will no prior first degrees will be entitled to a fee loan and which is not income assessed.
The point of the system is that you do not have to pay a fee upfront this was the bigger barrier when I was a student, and you only repay loans back when you are earning a salary at which you can afford to pay it back.
If you do have a household income of below £17,500 you should be entitled to a £2,700 maintenance grant and a £300 bursary from your institution, so if you think you are in this position get in touch with your Local Authority.0 -
i applied for student support income assessed in late june, and i will be starting uni in september. Ive heard nothing from them until today when my father rang to say he has had 2 letters from student support giving him an ART number and password enabling him to login to the website and so forth.
He has passed it onto me and ive logged in, and apparently im "awaiting assessment"
What my worry is that why havent i recieved any letters about a login for me? has the loan been done in my dads name by mistake? Is it normal for it to go through a parent and not you?
Also it says awaiting assessment, with a link about what evidence i can send in(im sure i sent a photocopy of my P60 in the first place), but without logging ito this site i wouldnt even know they wanted anything, so do they want evidence or not? im confused0 -
hi, its all sorted out now but just out of curiosity what exactly is teh thinking behind the 3 year 'self-supporting' rule? why do you have to have been self-suporting for 3 years before you can fill in your own student finance forms if youre under 25, unmarried and childless? thats ridiculous! teh day you move out of your poarents house you become self-supporting- never mind after 2 and a half years? why does teh slc think that people whove lived on their own for two and a half years still live off their parents money? and why do tehy assume taht everyone lives at their parents hoem until theyre 25? and whay would it be easier to fill im ny forms if id eloped or been a young mum? makes no sense! please can you tell me what exactly is teh thinking behind this? if you know? thanks very much:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0
