I don't think they were voluntary, they were set up as a direct debit to come straight from my account, as soon as i'd finished University. When I applied I had to give my bank details.
That would be voluntary because you set up the DD and could have cancelled it when you were earning under the threshold. It wasn't take as a direct deduction from your earnings0 -
I am awaiting info from SLC, but in the interim wonder if anyone can advise me. Is there a definitive guide about loans that have been sold on? I am somewhat confused about two loans that were bought by Erudio. I attended a Scottish University and have two mortgage-style loans pre-1998, and others post-1998, which I presume are ICR style. The Erudio loans were issued in 1999 and 2000. I thought Erudio had only purchased the mortgage style portfolio, yet I am required to apply for deferment for these loans. When did salary deductions start to be implemented?0

Income contingent loans were introduced for courses starting in September 1998 onwards.0 -
Does anyone know if the Student Loans Company ever forgives part of the loan if you pay in full, in one lump sum? Is it even worth asking?0

No. They are bound by Government regulations which don't allow them to give an early repayment discount. They would only be able to do that if Government introduced this policy.0 -

Forgive me, but as I started pre-1998 are my 1998 and beyond loans (ie 99 and 00) also treated as mortgage type loans, or are they treated separately and as ICR? Repayments are being deducted from my salary every month but to confuse matters, I appear to have two different customer reference numbers on the student loan repayment site, one of which I cannot access.0 -

Just found some paperwork. Mortgage style indeed. !!!!!!.0 -
What I want to know is how and why so many students get away with paying their student loans?
Eu students who came to the UK to study joked how they'd not have to pay their loans and a few of my friends moved to countries like the USA and Germany and now just ignore their student loans and have no intention of paying.
Why doesn't the government enforce the loans and why is it so easy for people to simply ignore their loans?0 -
The Government sold off the loans to private companies so it is up to them to pursue payment.
The Government have no interest in the repayments.0 -
They are being enforced - I received an email collections agency notice last week, even though I'm under the income threshold. I have to fill out forms and send documentary evidence to prove it.0
