    Hi..thanks for looking at this.

2006 - July 2013, living in Guernsey with her mother, attending school and 6th form college. Finished 'A' levels last year. Not sure it is relevant but in her own right she was issued a temporary housing licence through her mums marriage to a local, rather than any permanent licence. Has been working part-time since 16 though never earning more than about £3k a year.

Thanks for that. Can I also just clarify:

    - Your daughter started her course September 2013
    - From July 13, her main address was in the UK

Might need to ask more questions as we go forward, as residency is never a straightforward case.

Ask away as the alternative isn't very appealing. Yes, she started a full-time, four year course in September 2013.
As for residency I'm not sure how I can prove that, she certainly moved over then but thinking about it we didn't put her on the electoral role and aside from obtaining her N.I number here I don't think she changed any of her bank details as she does everything on-line. In addition after a Summer holiday and a three week Duke of Edinburgh trip abroad she really only spent about three weeks with me before starting University.
    Appreciate your assistance..

Ok, thanks for that. With regards to her passport, was this a Channel Islands issued one, or from the UK?

It's a channel islands one, which we did enquire about at the time and were told it wouldn't make any difference to her should she decide to move to England - sadly neither I nor the person I spoke to considered residency in terms of student loans in that conversation.

Taking all this into account, I believe SFE have made the correct decision, based on the residency grounds laid out in Schedule 1 of The Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011. If it was a standard British passport, then she would've been entitled.

Guernsey do have a scheme though, so I think she needs to make an application to them. Sorry about the SFE situation, but they're legally allowed to do this, even if the mistake was their own.

Try and give them a call, and explain the situation. I'm not familiar with their system I'm afraid.

Have to confess that was the answer I was expecting, however I very much appreciate you looking into this for me, thank you. Been onto Guernsey yesterday and they'll means test any award so am expecting just shy of £2k p/a, every little helps.
On the bright side whilst it'll be a struggle daughter has decided to work her way through Uni , least if we succeed there will be no debt.
    Once again my thanks.

Went to apply for student finance last year before finding out I was inelligible. Studied previously in 2009/10 and was asked for my birth certificate, which they saw for the 09/10 loan. So why was I asked for it again?

Wasn't elligible for student loan because had OU finance in February.

Only want to apply for DSA for September entry. I assume that the same stuff applies in terms of proving residency and stuff?

They don't keep copies on file. It is easier to ask everyone to provide the same evidence and tick the same boxes rather than have 'previously seen' boxes which might be ticked by mistake.

  • Hi
Hope you can help. My son who is now 20 is at uni in Coventry. He did a ucas funded course at a college there last year to get onto he course he wanted to do. He has had problems with dyslexia for which he has been given extra funding for equipment.
He was living with his girlfriend up there for 2 years and now he lives in halls but is not coping at all. He suffers from anxiety and being in Coventry with the bad memories of his break up and away from home means he has also had to go back onto anti depressants.
He has found a course locally that he could do but the college told him it would be better for him to drop out as they prob wouldn't accept him on the second year and he would have to start again. When he called student loans they said even if he dropped out now they wouldn't fund another first year. Is there anything you could suggest?
