  • Hi, I was wondering if there is any way of deferring my student loan for one more year. I am in the very very old student loans system my first one was 1997 and i have now just reached the salary threshold where i have to start paying back but at the minute i am in no position to pay the minimum (approx £120) payment. I have sent the student loans company a letter stating this and a breakdown of my outgoings and incomings and it clearly shows i cannot afford to pay this yet each month. Also when is the point in this very old system my loans are wiped? My friend says it is 10 years and this would be 10 years since i took out the loan. Appreciate any light you can shed on my query.

    Regards Mike

    Hi there
I was wondering if anyone could help me in terms of student loans arrears.
Ever since I graduated back in 1996 I have never earnt over the amount so that I would have to pay it back.
One year I was too late with the deferrment forms now my arrears is approx £1000, with so much added on top in charges, I know it is my own fault for being late with returning the forms, but it sickens me that I should have to pay it back, I did offer £10 a month to S.L to pay it off, but to be honest after seeing the interest added on each month and therefore not seeing the debt go down I felt reluctant to pay it off resulting in the debt being passed to a collection agency.
    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

am an student in my first year at university and have a 3 year old child, and have lived independently with my son for 3 years. I was advised by the student loan company that my finance would come from income support. In december my benefits were stopped and I have received a demand claiming back the benefits. The student loan company dont seem to know how to help me, does anyone know what finance and loans I can claim. At this moment in time I have no income at all apart from having my child care costs paid for. The student loan company advised i could claim child tax credit, but when i applied for that, I was advised I am not entitled to it..

  • Hi,

Can you still get the full amount for the "non-income assessed" loan if you are a home owner with a mortgage? I am not an independent student.

    Thanks,

Just to let people know - the forms for 2007 entry to university should be available from your schools/colleges now.

You can also apply online from this year

  • Hi can students from UK going to USA to study take a loan out here? Hope you can help!
  • My friend has started to complete the online application. He intends applying for the special support grant, which he'd been advised isn't means tested. However, he spoke with student finance direct (student loans company), and they advised it is means tested and they need proof of all his benefits.

    Any info/advice would be appreciated.

The Special Support Grant is income assessed (means-tested) and is available if, during the academic year, they are 'a prescribed person' under the Income Support or Housing Benefit regulations. This will generally be single parents, other student parents if they have a partner who is also a student, and students with qualifying disabilities.

SLC will I would expect need proof that your friend is receiving these benefits, which I suspect shouldn't be that difficult?
