hi my son needs to know how much loan will he get if he does part time at uni.also does or have anyone filled in an alf form.
urgent please as he has to make a decision bfore end of next week.

By ALF I guess you mean access to learning? I filled one in last year (never actually returned in) and they can be quite a pain to do. They want to know literally every single little detail about what you spend and what happens with your bank. This isn't really a problem for me it's just that they want so much evidence it's impossible to get hold of it all!
  • well its only been since june, but my application has finally been assessed! :T

    £1800 a term, aint bad!
  • Our daughter has started an arts foundation course at Manchester, she has been travelling in to Manchester everyday, costs about £9.00 per day,
she is travelling for about 2 hours each way and is really tired.

She would like to be able to get a room in Manchester is she entitled to a student loan of any description?
  • I've had a few problems with my reapplying my loan for this year, but I have been told that my local LEA are working on a 4-5 week delay. Once it has left their hands, how long will it take for the SLC to give me my first loan installment?
  • Dear SLC worker,

My daughter turned 4 AFTER the academic year started. So she has to stay in nursery another year. She is in a nursery attached to a private school and it runs from 8:30 to 3:00 pm. She then goes to After school club until 6pm.

I have been told by Lambeth LEA that nurseries run all day and because it's a private school they will not pay past January because she can go to a different school then (as she is now 4).

Are they not supposed to pay the childcare grant for the rest of this academic year?

    Thanks in advance.
  • \hello. I'm a final year student and wondered if there are any specific additional entitlments to aid final year projects. I need an additional loan to buty a new computer and video camera for my multimedia technology final project. I can't work out if i should try the slc, my university or an indepentant company
    Thanks
  • Hi, I am hoping someone can help me. My daughter is insisting on going to Australia to study. She has a letter of acceptance to the uni she wanted so are only now starting to sort it all out (have only found out, 3 days ago she has been accepted). Unfortunately I do not know where to start about getting a loan for her tuition fees, living costs etc. She has temporary accomodation arranged so short term she should be ok on that front. I have tried going through the threads pertaining to student loans but the vast majority seem to be biased towards in country funding. Any help would be very welcome.
    Thanks
  • I am thinking of getting a student loan out, but I don't want to pay a penny of interest (religious reasons) I have read that the student loans are based on inflation and interest is only charged once my degree is finished and I start a job. Is that true? I'm thinking of taking a loan out this year, and repaying it all in one go when I do my sandwich placement hopefully next year, thus avoiding any interest charges.

Am I correct in what I'm saying or will I still be charged interest?

    Thanks
  • If I go to university, I will be 25 and I have no money in my bank account/savings and I will be studying in a London campus (hopefully).

Does this mean I am automatically given the maximum loans and grants available? 3k tuition fees, 2.9k maintenance grant, around 6.1k living expenses.

That would mean I would be living on 9k per year, which works out at about £216 per week before rent. Thats more than I live on now. Surely that can't be right???

As far as I know, interest is charged at the rate of inflation and begins as soon as you are granted your first instalment of it. You pay back your total loan fee (plus interest) once you have graduated and are earning over 15k per annum. If you are earning less than 15k, you do not have to pay a penny.

However, please seek more advice, as I do not claim to be an absolute expert.
