Thank you for the reply. I do have a bank account so shouldn't need to open a new one.0

Help! I have applied and been accepted on a full time uni course in September. I'm a mature student and have applied for all the usual finance, which I have been granted. My problem is that I understand you can only have up to 4 years funded for study. Well I am currently completing an Open University course which I didn't have to pay for due to low income. Will this year's study / finance be taken off my 4 year's allowance? or is it 4 year's full time allowance you are allowed (i.e. the part time OU study won't count)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks,

Will you be completing your degree with the OU this year, or just a unit?0 -
Hi,
I have a particular situation and not sure what exactly to do when it comes to apply for my student loan, etc.
I'm an EU national but grew up in Canada and have no been in the UK for 3 years. I have been offered a place at different Universities and plan to go to one this year.
Techinically I've been independant since I've moved to the UK because I moved over on my own, but at the same time I don't officially pay rent at the house I live in. I basically live with friends, but not my parents. I just pay for things I need and consume, a.k.a I pay for my expenses but not the roof over my head.
So when I'm applying for the loan, am I meant to include the 'household' income or am I independant?
In addition to this, when I do choose my Uni. I will be moving to the city on my own. So I will be living on my own independantly when I start my studies.
I was looking at the criteria and was getting a bit confused because my situation isn't so black and white.
So if anyone could give me some advice I'd very much appreciate it. Please let me know if you need any further information.
Many thanks.

hey well i thought i'd register with his site because i think it is the best but i do need help with my student loan and am in need of advice. i went and studied at university between 2005 to 2008. i recieved the maintence loan and the £1000 grant because of my parents income and now since i had a tax rebate the student loan company is now after me for an 'overpayment' regarding the above grants/loans they want £666 from an overpaid £1000 grant and now they want 931 off me because i left from may 2008 which i do not think is right.
i am unemployed at the moment because i have recently had my first child and am living off my partners income which isnt much, it is just enough to live on and nothing much afterwards. we are on the local housing list to get a bigger house cause we only live in a 1 bed flat so the local council know we have no income or savings and i was going to see the citizens advice bureau but i thought i best seek advice elsewhere first before i go to them can anyone help in thie situation?
thank you

As an EU national you'll be eligible for a Fee Loan but no Maintenance Loan or Maintenance Grant. The Fee Loan doesn't depend on household income so your situation is irrelevant.0 -

If you've had an overpayment it's usually possible to negotiate repayments for this over a period of time. Offer what you can afford and increase it when your finances are healthier.0 -
Hello, I Need some advice on student loans and grants for my year abroad.
I am just finishing my second year at University, I am on a sandwich course, however my year abroad is a compulsory part of my course, if I do not go, I fail the whole course. I am finding it hard to find solid advice as to whether I can still get help from the SLC for year abroad.
I think what is making more anxious is that I am taking my 4 year old with me, and so making sure I am entitled to the maintenance loans/grants is extremely important.
I wanted to know what of the current loans I receive will still be available to apply for whilst on the year abroad.
Can I still get the maintenance loan? are grants still allowed?
please help, I have had so much conflicting advice and I just want to be able to plan it well so that my son are ok.
many thanks, maria0 -

I can't find information on the student loans website but Sussex University's advise to students is Yes, you are entitled to student loans. What you probably need to do is speak to your university's finance office and make sure the appropriate paperwork is filled in. They're going to be the experts as they will have 100s of students in similar positions to you. Good luck.0 -
Thank you so much for that, I will print this off and show it to the advice centre at uni.
It seems that whilst there are many single parent students studying at university, there aren't many doing a year abroad....( if anyone reading this has done, tips and advice would be mst helpful)
I also am finding it hard to get advice from the SLC , I live in a pilot area, whereby all enquiries are now directly made to the SLC, I have no LEA, so every time I call in, I am told different things.....argghhhh, will definitely look into this further. The information on the sussex uni site seems to have the same information as the british council and UKCISA sites so this is .
Thank you again!0
