Aerial Problems

Options
I have moved into a property and there is no aerial upstairs!! What is my best method for getting a good quality signal upstairs.

Basically i have 1 aerial in the house. This plugs into my sky hd and i have an aerial splitter attached and a extension cable is ran to the kitchen for the tv in there. As the signal is poor i have had to purchase an aerial booster for in here.

I would probably have to run a 30m + cable upstairs so this would lose a lot of signal. What is my best option here. Is it

Run the cable upstairs using tv link so i can still change sky.
Buy one of them av senders which sends the sky signal upstairs.
Or pay for an aerial engineer to split the feed at the roof and run another cable to the main bedroom.

Any help would be appreciated

We have the same problem and I am going the AV sender route. Reason being, No loss of signal and I can use my freeview box upstairs also.

Your first and second options you would lose far too much signal!

Sky multiroom might be an option with a magic eye remote system, dont have any info on this

AV senders are rubbish they operate on 2.5Ghz (same freq as microwave ovens and other equipment do not recommend have tried one)

A good aerial engineer WILL FIT A BOOSTER AT THE AERIAL, then split the signal, this is the only way to do it.Boosting an existing weak signal will never work very well.

With digital, in some areas the actual aerial required is in a different 'group' resulting in one or
more channels being poor or non existant

If your aerial is outside and more than 20 years old replace it anyway

hope that helps (used to be in the trade years ago)
never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow
  • The rule of thumb is that you do not split an already weak signal. DIY boosters are ok as far as they go.

Getting a qualified aerial installer in could be expensive, depending where you live. You could check the aerial and cabling yourself, to check for any wear or damage, including water in the cable.

You also need to check when digital switchover will take place. Whilst there is no such thing as a 'digital' aerial, despite what some cowboys might try and tell you, a good quality aerial, eg Televes or Triax, is recommended.

As you have already said you can use your digibox to feed a second TV set. Have you thought about running the cable outside? This might reduce the run, hence reducing signal loss.

  • Thanks for the help -

I have put the booster at the main aerial and then i think im going to run the cabling to each room. Problem with the av sender is it just sends the sky signal upstairs and i still dont have an aerial so i can only watch what is on downstairs tv so it will probably be easier to run the wire and have a freeview box and a tv link so the missus can watch eastenders upstairs while i watch the football downstairs.

Im assuming the av sender just sends the sky signal upstairs or can i connect the av reciever to a freeview box so effectively it acts a wireless aerial. To my knowledge this isnt possible. I assumed using a tv without an aerial and just using an av sender it would just be a clone on the first tv.
