Am I right to assume you mean D40x? the D40's 10.5mp brother?
At any rate I was slightly miffed when I brought mine (D40x) and the D60 came out shortly after, let me tell you one thing..... Cleaning the sensor is a royal pain in the !!!!!
If you never change the lens, you'll have no risk of dust on the sensor, but with a 15-55mm, a 55-200mm and a 50mm 1:1 macro lens, im finding dust a real problem.

Got the D40X myself a few months back. Managed to get it for £98 brand new from jessops as a clearance item. Only drawback is it didn't have a lens but managed to get one from ebay.

Very happy with my camera as it ticks all the boxes. It is also my 1st DSLR.

Best to ring around your local camera shops to see if they have any deals.

I looked at the D40 and D60 then ended up buying a refurbished D50 instead from SRS Microsystems. Paid under £200 and was good as new, served me well for over a year so far. They do a D40 with 18-55 lens for £250 at the moment which is worth a look.

Extra MPs are nice if you do a lot of cropping but otherwise 6MP is adequate for most people- you get a good quality print at A4 size.

Save on the body and spend on the lens IMO

If you plan on creating saleable images for stock photo websites, 6mp won't be upto the job as these site require images at 16mp format. You can just about get away with upsizing a 10.5mp image, but no chance with a 6.
I had a Canon 20d offered to me at a knock down price, but the combination of it's weight and 6mp sensor meant me turning it down in favour of a lesser Nikon D40x.

Not strictly true, I sell images from my D50 on istockphoto and shutterstock, minimum size is 2400px, 6MP will give you 3000px on longest side. For the higher level stock libraries they won't consider anything taken on any less than a D200/300 (12MP) anyway. MPs alone aren't everything.

Probably not much of a problem anyway. No offence intended but someone asking on this forum about a D40/60 isn't likely to have selling photos for stock as a priority ;)

No but thought id point it out, I take all considerations into account when making a new purchase :)
I agree that MP's aren't everything, the stock photo sites (or should I say the owner's) haven't a clue what they're doing, they believe that MP's make a good image and they're sorely mistaken.
