Toymaker - my friend has a 450D as well - love the pic of the frog
This is Ken rockwells reviews of the D40 and Canon EOS400 - he reviews other cameras as well and contains user guides for nikon and canon cameras.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but isn't the D40 *only* 6 megapixels?A problem shared is a problem multiplied.

Megapixels do not tell you the full story and anywhere from 6-10MP (on a DSLR) is absolutely fine for most types of photographs and printing. There are two areas of photography though where more pixels are an advantage and they are Landscape Photography and Macro Photography.
Landscapes photos tend to contain lots of objects in the frame that are small and/or fine such as blades of grass, corn fields, stone walls, trees etc etc etc. The more pixels that there are to record these the more detail they will have and the better they will look. This is why professional Landscape photographers don't use DSLR's but Medium Format Cameras which have vastly more resolution.
Macro photos are by their nature going to be of small things that have lots of fine detail such as the hairs on bee's, fly's eyes etc. Whilst with a true (1:1) macro lens you can utilize most of the pixels on any camera regardless of it's resolution, as macro is all about the detail the more pixels you have the more detail you will record and the better the image.2014 running challenge 471.95 km / 1000 km.0 -
Hi
still trying to buy one of these. Tescos says discontinued and Argos out of stock? Walters says out of stock too? Any ideas?
thanks again0 -
Looks like they are killing off the D40 so you will have to move quick if you really don't want to spend the extra on a D60.
one on eBay 20 hrs to go I would be happy buying for about £220 the buy it now are all around £300 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Nikon-D40-Digital-Camera-with-18-55mm-lens_W0QQitemZ320376798733QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item4a97f1fe0d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A500 -

2 GB will be more than big enough in Large Fine JPEG you will get over 500 and in RAW(which you should not really bother with) over 300 on 2GB.
I would prefer to have 2 2GB than 1 4GB.0 -
