Cost of moving meters

Hello. My parents are buying a house. The unusual part is that the vendor have turned their one home into 2 & my parents are buying the second house. The vendor has told them that the second house is still connected to the main house's gas & electricity & that it would be up to them to have this separated. I have no idea what the cost would be & neither do my parents. It has been difficult to get any idea of costs. I know that to move a meter can cost £600-£700 but in this case it would involve a lot more work (& money). I was hoping that someone might have an idea about what work is involved & rough costs. This would be greatly appreciated. Than you

It will depend on a number of factors such as how far is the house from the gas and electric mains. If you search this forum you will find people moaning that it will costs 00s or 000s to move a meter because in a lot of cases a new pipe/cable is required. Yours will be the same. Also you say it is 'still connected' to the other house but how seperate are the 2 lots of pipes/cables? Do they have there own fuse board with a single cable coming from the main house? Suggest you need to get someone in to look at that because it may not just be a case of a new supply. Personally unless they are getting a good deal I would make it a condition of the purchase that the current owners get the work done not the other way round because until your parents start they may not know 100% what they are letting themselves in for and there sounds like they would have no comeback. What does the HIP say about this?

Thank you for response. I don't know what HIP says but will have a look. I will pass this onto my parents & get them to find out answers. I have viewed the house & this is the only problem with it...the owners had a parent living there & divided up the house now the parent has died so they are keeping the arrangement permanent & selling. Vendor said they will not do work themselves & EA has said that cost would be around £5000 but i do not know where this figure came from. Thank you again
