I'm not applying for any credit until next year when technically I need "credit" for my car insurance. I've just paid off a credit card so I will be attempting to close that account very soon.

credit for car insurance is not credit score based so unless you have fraud they will always offer it. Don't worry! OR the logical thing to do would be to get a 0% Purchases Credit Card nearer the renewal date and but it on that at 0% for the year - cheaper than the insurers own insurance!
