With 3 already. Can I move to a new contract and keep number (Quidco query)?

Having spent 70 mins on the phone to 3 today, I could have killed them. Have one contract just expired, another about to (PAC for phone 1 last week, got the second one today).
I want 2 new contracts, the E71 on the £20 texter plan. I tried for a bit of discount, and I was offered 43pence per contract, along with a one time discount of £5 per contract. I pointed out that the 43p 'discount' is actually the VAT saving, so she offered a free 2Gb SD card (that already comes with the phone  ).
If I could get them at £17 I'd take them, but they weren't for budging (I currently spend ~£36pm on current contracts).

Looking on Quidco, they're giving £47.50 for each £20 texter contract, which would bring the price into £16.94pm (over 18 months). I'd accept that as a way around it, but can I keep the old numbers if I move across on an internet only deal? Obviously I need to complete online to get the cashback.

Anyone tried this and been successful?

You'd have to port out to another network and then port back. If you open a new contract they won't let you move your old number to it.

I thought that would be the case. Will have to wait and see if they call me to offer anything else.
  • Hi

What about using one contract to recommend a new contract - which would give you a £30 discount for each 'phone'? (Recommend a friend).

I phoned 3 two days ago, contract about to end in a couple of months, wanting to upgrade phone on my current contract (Mix and match 300 = £15 pm). I wanted the Nokia 6220 which cost £17 pm on MM300, but they wouldn't budge - telling me 'the £2 extra pm is only the cost of a cup of coffee! I explained I didn't want to pay any extra and as I had been a customer for 5 years, I wasn't asking for a massive discount. No way - despite saying when contract run out I would cancel.

I will now wait until my contract runs out, get hubby to recommend me (£30 each) and if I still can't have the 6220 will downgrade to their Mix and Match 100 as I don't use anywhere near 300 mins/texts. This costs £9 with the same phone (Nokia 3120) they were offering me as an upgrade on the £15 deal. Why can't they see they are loosing out here.....

I have checked other providers and sadly can't find a deal to match 3.

From the T+C's: The recommender and the person being recommended cannot be the same person.

Whether they check up on that or not I don't know.

Yet you still want a discount.

Anyway, you are not entitled to anything whatsoever (other than an upgrade), you are still in your minimum contract term. Why do you think they would be offering you a discount now? It might be different if you leave it until your contract ends and are a good (ie profitable) customer.

I am in the same situation with T-mobile. Does my plan make sense. I plan to port my numbers 'away' to PAYG phones of rival operator and port it back in 2-3 months.
My first question is ' what is the minimum time before you can safely port the number back.?
The second is Will they fail me on their credit check if I return too soon? I can always use my wife's details (still flaunting her maiden name but same address)

You can port back pretty much as soon as you ported out to someone else - that is what I think to be the case. It may be there is 30 day limit imposed but I doubt it.

Just port out to another provider and once its done, ask the new provider for a pac code and see what they tell you.

Fail your credit check? Only if you have something wrong with it.

I would use your own name and if your wife's, then you use her current name if she has credit issues of her own or to avoid any in future.
