Because the OP wouldn't be tied into an 18 month £35+ contract??

The £160 original iPhone was £160 + 18months at £35 = £790. I think I'd rather pay £99 + 18months at £35!0 -

I'd rather pay £99-£160 and stick a non-contract SIM in it:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

No such option there - it's £350 for the PAYG phone, which obviously won't drop in price since O2 have no guarantee of a continued revenue from you. The contract device price might drop, but then you're still stuck with the 18 month contract, which costs you more than the PAYG in the end.0 -
I think you have all missed the point
When the 3G iPhone was released O2 cleared out all their 1st Gen iPhones for £160 cash - sim free.
You walked in with £160 cash, you walked out with a brand new iphone.
My question was has anyone heard anything similar is going to happen with the new iphone due for release this summer?
In other words, will I be able to buy a 3G Iphone the same way I bought a 1st gen one,
For £160 cash!0 -

I didn't miss the point! The iphone has already been reduced (on contract) to make way for the new one (rumour has it it will be launched when Steve Jobs returns in June :j). I don't think they'll be reducing it further, but you never know.:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

The last time this happened, I did just what was said above- got a 2G iPhone from CPW for £169. Unlocked/Jailbroke and activated it for nowt. Popped in my Virgin sim (£10/month
) and regularly use their unlimited web browsing for 30p/day. Any large downloads are done at home on the wifi! Having checked 2G phone prices on ebay, I'm still smiling...
...and then the window licker said to me...0 -

They didn't sell them sim free. You were meant to sign up for an 18 month contract but because they didn't make you sign up for the contract in store you could jailbreak/unlock the phone at home and use it without a contract.
You could have bought it this way for £269 before it was reduced to £169.
The 3G purchasing process is different. You have to sign up for the contract in store, rather than just pay for the phone and then activate and sign up for the contract at home. They have already reduced the price of the phone to free on some contracts to clear the stock ahead of the new model like they did last year.0
