Hi all
I have an allotment with which I inherited two large rhubarb plants, which have now turned into 4 that have gone to seed. i did offer the rhubard to fellow allotmenteers but there is still a lot there and as I can't stand the stuff i would rather get rid of them and use the space for something else. Short of using a rotivator how would I get rid of them? Does anyone know of a way to kill them off without damaging soil and wildlife? They are very large and taller than me, which is not saying much  but I don't think digging them out will be possible for me, or even for someone a lot stronger. Any ideas?
Thanks guys.

put a post offering it on freecycle and say taker has to remove. that way, you are rid and someone gets to make use of the rhubarb!
i understand where you are coming from as i hate the stuff and our allotmant had 3 plants-luckily OH will eat it daily!!!Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.....0 -
Dig it up and offer on freecycle - it always goes when its advertised here! If you don't fancy digging it up yourself - advertise it for the freecyclers to dig it out themselves!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

If you can bear to wait until the autumn when the plants have all died back into the ground, you'll find it a lot easier to dig up then0

AliceBanned, if you are near me (I'm in the same county
) I'd love it!
My mum can't believe that I've killed 3 plants in the last few years - she always had masses :rotfl:0 -
Hi guys
Thanks for the replies. yes anyone is welcome to come and dig it up; please send me a private message (I've had one already) if anyone wants to dig it up. I don't check this site every day but will get back to you within a few days. When you say freecycle you mean the local listing, or something on here? I'm not sure what was meant.
I'd rather give it away to a good home :A as I will never use it.
many thanks0 -
Yes, start digging. The roots will go down two or three feet and you need to get the lot out! I'm 5'4" and fifty and I dug out two huge rhubarb beds last year so no excuses...get the shovel going.
(It did take me three afternoons, must admit!!)Val.0 -

yes freecycle is a yahoo site very good for reusing things. You can put things on and people come and take them away, then yu can ask for things to. It's al free and no money is involved.

I managed to get rid of several bushes and plants on freecycle - and advertised that they must dig them out themselves! Got my weeding done free!0
