Tell them that you are a Jehovah's Witness and don't celebrate birthdays .... they'll never bother you again!!! Just remember not to send Christmas cards though .... and don't expect anything on your own 50th!!!0

Also annoys me when they come collecting for a charity and it is a charity that you would never donate to at any time.
This happened to me last year - my colleague was doing the Race for Life and I refused to sponsor her as I don't give to Cancer Research UK (at first I just ignored the form, which she left in reception, but she then bought it to my desk and asked me directly so I had no choice).
Then she wanted to know why I didn't give to them, and I had to explain without trying to get into a big row about it.
It was embarassing for both of us, I think.
However, she is doing it again this year so I hope she remembers not to ask me again.0 -
This actually happened to me. I didn't contribute, because I scarcely knew the person and couldn't spare the cash. I was labelled 'mean' and given the cold shoulder. This lasted a long time and made for a very unpleasant work experience. Would I do it again? I think I would, but I also think people now are more understanding about other people's budgets.0

That's always been a risk I've not been prepared to take.
When you first get somewhere, you have no idea what the people will be like, but damn they can make life miserable if they want to, which is why I always stick the money in. For the sake of a tenner, it's just not worth the trouble.0 -

NO WAY. Four very good reasons why not are in the question. Even without those reasons £10 is OTT for a work colleague.
If there's a few in the department it becomes expensive over the year. A collection specifying an amount is wrong in my view - send the envelope round and let people put in what they feel comfortable with - if that's nothing then pass it on.0 -
£10 is too much for any collection, and new people should be expected to contribute.
Where I've worked, birthday boy or girl brings in cakes. Collections are for when people leave, weddings, babies etc. Otherwise the number of collections would just be ridiculous.
In this situation though, I would put a pound or two in for someone I didn't know, just to show goodwill.0 -
Sorry, the above was supposed to read "new people SHOULDN'T be expected to contribute".0

No way man!0

Organisations really need to get on top of this,It obviously is a bone of contention and can lead to bullying in the work place.
A clear policy about collections in the workplace touching on consistency and not emotionally blackmailing colleagues needs to be written, and observed by managers to make sure nobody feels aggrieved.0 -
That would be a no for me! Unless it was in November as my birthday is in December and I would expect the same :-)0
