Brighthouse - OMG - the prices...

  • There is a very real and pressing need to revive this thread. A shiny new Brighthouse store has just opened in Basingstoke, and glancing in the window I too could not believe the punitive amounts charged for items. People have to be made aware that there are alternatives for obtaining necessary items when money is tight. Please investigate free ads and credit unions before resorting to these parasites. I also stress for necessary items. Washing machines and cookers fall into this category, not flat screens and games consoles. I also feel that Brighhouse's sponsoring of aussie soaps gives them a legitamacy that must be challenged.

Brighthouse used to also sponsor Trisha Goddard's show on five until they stopped buying episodes from her production company, probably so they could pay for the travesty called Live from Studio Five (which is probably why they also axed Martin's It Pays To Watch show).

On the controversial side though, why is it that people on low incomes absolutely have to have a 50" plasma, leather sofa or dish washer?. I can't afford these items on my salary and can happily live without.

I guess it's to do with today's need to have the latest/bestest at whatever cost. Again, in my old job at the Council, most of my tenants who were on benefits had the latest mobile phones (why?) and 32" TV's. Not my position to question or judge, but I think today, people have forgotton their priorities. What's wrong with a 2nd hand sofa or dishwasher from the newspaper?. Or are we just in a world where half the population just don't understand the importance of money anymore?.

Agree to a point, we have a brighthouse locally and I looked through the window the other day ( as you do) It confirmed that a) there were no cheap items to be had b) there were no "bog standard" crts only MASSIVE flat screens that were priced megamoney. At least catalogues have some cheaper items to "pay off on the drip" whereas brighthouse dont seem to from what I can tell.

All the fridges were MASSIVE Us style, where was the cheapier end? Nowhere.

If someone has no money and needs these appliances (not sure I count a tv as a need by the way!) then I can see why they end up with the priceier stuff if they choose to engage with Brighthouse.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I cant see what the issue is, people know what the APR is and how much its going to cost weekly. If they cant multiply that amount by the number of payements then really they should not be allowed out on their own.

Also complaining about the APR, how much do Argos charge? And they are a high street retailer.

Because we are constantly bombarded with advertisements that say that to be happy,to get the gir0/l to get the boy/to be the best of your mates you have the biggest, the fastest, the newest.

Some of us are luckily enough too see around this but many people don't.

Government love it because they get there taxes and party loans and donations and companies love it because they get to make money.

We live in society where the poorest are the worse treated.

Lack of education about money. That's why martins campaign for financial education is so important. You come on this site and have allready know or have been educated many are not as lucky.

my sister bought some goods she didnt really need - hifi and that - but, when she was made redundant she couldnt always pay on time because her benefits were being messed about - she found out if you were late paying by even a day you got charged - these charges were then taken into account with interest too - very annoying when you can hardly afford to put food on the table........

anyways, shes now back in work but cannot get to pay till the saturday but her payment day is thursday but they wont alter it, so, she was paying late charges every time - now, i pay for her and she gives me it on the saturday - bloodsucking vultures they are.........

hi i am currently a customer at bh too and i asked my store about this same sort of problem. my best day to pay is tusday however they have always said if i am unable to pay that day then by close of business on the saturday i must pay or i will be charged this should apply to all stores you should ask to contact head office and report the store on this issue as this way of handling things must be unlawful. unfortunatly for others it seems the store i deal with is the only decent store with the company. dont know if this helps but i hope it all gets sorted for your sister

I would hope it's sorted out with magoogy's sister by now as the post was 5 1/2 years ago. Saying that, that's probably a typical Brighthouse repayment period.
