Where are downloaded files saved?

  • It's not in recent docs either, but I'm assuming that's because I didn't save the file manually? I'll try Recuva

Have you just searched for it by filename? If you just opened it to view it online then it may never have downloaded to your local machine.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • recuva only brought up files that were over 2 years old but nothing newer! Does that mean I won't be able to get it? Do you mean if i just clicked open, it won't have downloaded as a temp file? I thought all downloads were saved, for a short time anyway!

    Try this:
Go to the Temporary Internet Files folder and look for Content.ie5 (you may need to turn on Show hidden files/folders) - the easiest way to do this is to browse to the
T.I.F folder in windows explorer then type \content.ie5 at the end.
You should find a number of oddly named folders (random letters/numbers)
Try searching here for the file you downloaded; it might still be there!

  • I can't find the TIF folder on my computer! And I don't seem to have a content.ie5 folder either.

Please tell us your exam isn't in IT proficiency! :D

If you have Windows and are using Internet Explorer then you DO have a Temporary Internet Files (aka T.I.F.) folder - to find out where it is, go to the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, select Internet Options, then click on the Settings button in the Temporary Internet Files section. This should show you the current location.
Copy this location into your Internet Explorer Address Bar and add to the end of it \content.ie5
(as I mentioned in my earlier post, you might have to turn on hidden files and folders before anything shows up -

To display hidden files and folders:
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    Double-click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders. )

Once you've got into the Content.ie5 folder you should find a load of oddly named folders - IF your downloaded file is still on your computer it will probably be in one of these folders - you should be able to use the F3 search function to look for the file name; alternatively, open each folder and have a look. If you can't find it, it isn't there and you'll have to have another go at downloading it if it is still available.

Why not just check where the browse is saving it to?

Firefox: Tools > Options - the download location can be viewed/changed on the Main tab

IE when you click download, save - it'll ask you for the location to save in...

    Chrome will have similar options.

If you want to open the temporary internet files folder and aren't IT minded, just do it from the internet options, "show files" button...

The OP asked where downloaded files are if they are not in the location to which they were saved - IE downloads first to the Temporary Internet Files folder then copies over to the selected location, and it isn't neccessarily deleted once copied over, hence my admittedly lengthy post!
