Where are downloaded files saved?

When I download a file in IE, where is it saved? Recently I downloaded a file from university, but it has since been removed. I didn't save it, but was wondering if there was anyway to retrieve it from where it downloaded to on my computer? Or will it have deleted itself?

I don't know if I explained it very well, but I don't actually save the file, I just click open. But that's must save it somewhere temporarily, I'm assuming. There's nothing in my documents/downloads. Is it possible to retrieve these temporary files? The exams are cooming up on thurs, and loads of people in the year don't have the stuff now!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

If you open a file it will go into users->username->appdata->local->temp
thats windows wasta - similar location for xp
depending on the type of file - IE can delete the file automatically after you have finished doing what ever you do when you opened it.0 -
I have xp. I know with google chrome, it saves every file in downloads, but not with IE! It was a Microsoft Word 2007 file, would it delete this? If so, is there any way to recover it?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Yea, I opened the file, looked at it and then closed it, thinking I'd be able to download it again. But I didn't count on the lecturer taking it away!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0
