Not all sipermarkets have the same problem with bananas, if you go into Sainsbury's Berryden Road Aberdeen after 7pm you will find it very hard to find a banana in the store. The lesson here is, buy in less bananas.
In my store we would try to make sure customers can buy almost everything at 7pm at night. People don't stop buying bananas because it is after 7pm.0 -
My local Tesco did that with peppers last week. They were the 3 in a packet, not the loose ones. It was about 8am and the girl was removing them from the shelf. I went to pick some up but she told me I couldn't have them as they had gone out of date the night before.
The peppers were in perfect condition, not bashed or soft etc. She told me that they had to be wasted.
Was was more shocking was that there must have been 20 green trays of them, hundreds of perfectly edible peppers being thrown in the incinerator!
What is more annoying is that they are prepared to sell squashed strawberries that have gone mouldy, but are still in date. Why can't the morons in charge use a bit of discretion and in these hard times sell the food we want to buy!0 -
I know we are talking about Tescos. But all supermarkets are like it.
I was in a local sainsburys at 7pm the other night and they where marking down bread and cakes only to 50% off. They shut in a hour and still wanted silly money. And had two shallow trolleys ram packed. Rather than knocking it down to 10p a loaf. Unike my local Asda in there at 3pm sunday and was getting pre-cut baps 12 in a packet 10p normal price well over a £1. They just wanted to get rid of it all.
In another Sainsburys I witnessed 15 mins before closing bread and cakes only marked down to 50% being stuffed in clear plastic bags in readiness I assume to be dumped.

Bananas only have a 1 day shelf life when they arrive in store, if we are lucky they have 2 days. While there it may seem stupid, if we start to sell them after their stamped shelf life, where does it end? Essentially who are we (ie Tesco Staff in store) to decide when we should extend the shelf life? People wouldn't be happy if we did it with mince or a lasagne, so why would we do it with bananas?
There is a big difference between mince and bananas. With meat I don't even trust the use by date. I look at it to see if it is brown as it usually goes off before the date. Bananas, well they are not going to give you food poisoning for being black and mushy. They are fine in cooking and some people even prefer to eat them that way.I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -

I don't think this argument can be resolved since there are rules and laws that we have to abide by that a lot of people don't seem to agree with.
On the same note, the mince may be out of date and still look fine, you wouldn't be happy with Tesco or any other supermarket selling you it. Bananas do fall into the same boat. They may not give food poisoning, but the guy filling the shelf with them isn't usually qualified to tell you that 100%. Also the minute Tesco start selling the stuff after its date, another thread will start going on about Tesco selling these items after its date and how it is a disgrace etc etc.0 -
I have seen bananas of this type being sold in bags for a quid at the local fruit and veg stalls. Once they had M&S ones. The bananas still had the store stickers on them.
I guess some stores sell the bananas off whilst others sell them instore in the reduced section.
Didn't some bloke buy LOADS of bananas once as he got loads of clubcard points for them? I think this was a very long time ago when CC first came out. Anyway, so OT....sorry.0 -

That worries me, the out of code stock should have been removed from sale BEFORE start of trade. The fact that out of code stock was still on display tells me that no matter how often Tesco get fined for displaying out of code products, they will never learn their lesson.Like good food and drink?

I would never eat green bananas. This fruit (actually it is a berry) is at its best when fully yellow and beginning to get mottled with brown spots. That's when it's perfectly ripe and its taste is full and delicious.
That said, I find that waste quite shocking but sadly not surprising at all.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
