The great Tesco banana dump!

I'm just back from my local Tesco. I needed bananas, but they never seemed to have any that weren't green - now I know why...
One of the staff was going through the banana section, and throwing all the stock into a trolley. I asked her why - they were going to be dumped! These bananas weren't even fully ripe - they were still green at the ends. I asked her why they were being dumped, when they wouldn't be ready to eat for a couple of days, and she said it was management policy and they had to be dumped once they went yellow....
There were 4 trays of bananas - I reckon that's at least 40 bunches - going to waste. Not to mention the cost to us consumers - that level of wastage must be reflected in the store overhead!

Sorry to pull you up but Banana 'bunches' are called 'Hands' I grew up living at a greengrocers and my dad hated it when people called them bunches!! lol.
I agree with you about the chucking out though never would have happened in our shop!!0 -
I don't buy them unless they are yellow - the kids don't like them green, and it's pointless buying something they can't eat for a few days. No wonder I can never get any in Tesco.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0

I get them from a proper green grocers and always go for the green one's as i buy them to last a week and bananas ripen quickly.
Ban the supermarkets for fruit and veg and get them from the green grocers. Where they sell pears that are not pear shape and get carrots that are bent shaped and not perfectly straight.the same goes for strwberry's too0 -
What a waste. Bananas are ripe when they are speckly brown and sweet. Can't eat green unripe ones cos they give me tummy ache. Can't they sell them cheap? Love banana cake or mashed banana sandwiches.0

I buy green ones to last the week and a few yellow ones for straight away. Ridiculous dumping them like that!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Very odd that.
Over the last 8 weeks there has been a worldwide banana shortage ( you the consumer would not realise that as the Supermarkets fix there prices months ahead matched up to huge guarantees of purchase but if they go short the supplier has to still supply at that price) You may only pay 35-37p a Lb in a supermarket but independent greengrocers have been having to sell up to 80 plb.
There is a 5% built in loss due to wastage by the supermarkets in their retail price. So any less they make more money any more then it is a shared loss between the supplier  yes the supplier and the supermarket.
When product is short like of late it is normally less ripe as the supply demand outstrips the time it takes to put it through the ripening process."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

why can they not give them away to old peoples homes or schools or homeless people.
the people should be allowed to leave there phones numbers and then pick them up.0 -
