The great Tesco banana dump!

  • Another thought on this - I'd originally posted that the bananas were bring dumped in my local store at about 3pm Sunday. That's near closing time for UK mainland stores - but here Sunday opening is 1pm to 6pm. I wonder if the time for dumping is given in a Head Office directive, then followed slavishly in my local store? I wouldn't have picked this up if the dumping had been at close of business!

Bananas are not the same as mince or lasagne or any other manufactured food or fresh meat. They grow naturally and they do not have an "eat by" date when they are growing on the tree. Oh for goodness sake, this is madness. I hate green bananas. I also bought mine in Lidl today.
Lamb chops grow naturally, and don't have an "eat by" date when they're on the sheep!

this has probably more to do with the trading standards/health authority, as they can turn up at any supermarket on the spot and look at any product, so the supermarkets have to be able to prove the best before date/sell by date, if they were found out to be extending the lifes of products they could get hit with a hefty fine on the spot, i work in a supermarket, and although i do agree it is a waste, as somebody else has pointed out if you extend the life on bananas, where do you stop, bread, fish, meat, chesse, chickens?

But you're not going to get food poisoning from eating fruit that's a day or two over, you are with meat. They're very different. This is a shocking waste when many people can't afford to eat properly. They should send them round to the nearest homeless shelter rather than dump them.

Yet another reason, I'm fast going off Tesco.......

    Still on website

Which means that their policy is TWICE as stupid!

More than stupid downright untrue, All supermarkets must have the same problem with Banannas, and my local Asda sell green ones, yellow ones and speckled ones
most weeks at 19p a killo I honestly dont think I have paid full price for Banannas or anything else for about a year since I discovered the reduced fruit and veg was pretty much on a dai ly basis

Bear in mind I don't speak for Tesco here.

Do you honestly think that if Tesco could still sell you these bananas they would??? The company just made £3billion profit, but I'm sure they would have loved a lot more if but they had to waste bananas because they went past their display until date. I know its stupid, and I bet there is someone on the board sitting asking why do we throw out all this stock when it is still ok to eat? The answer is there are laws in place to protect consumers from retailers who decide to sell items after their dates and I can definitely confirm that Tesco as a company don't want to break these laws.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time Tesco have been fined for having out of date goods on display, in fact I have seen items, particularly on the bakery dept out of date in the Danestone (Aberdeen) store, I have pointed it out to some of the colleagues and got the impression that they don't give a ****.

Not all sipermarkets have the same problem with bananas, if you go into Sainsbury's Berryden Road Aberdeen after 7pm you will find it very hard to find a banana in the store. The lesson here is, buy in less bananas.
