Which suitcase?

I have seen so-called hard bodied cases when I've been out shopping. They looked so thin and brittle that I don't think they would survive one holiday at the mercy of the baggage handlers.
Ours are about 1cm thick and approx 5kgs empty. I've looked at so-called lighter cases, but when I lifted them and checked the weight they were only about 0.5kg lighter so I'll stick with the ones I have.0 -
I tend to go for cheap nylon bags as most flights are cheap european and they weight virtually nothing. Don't forget wheels are heavy and take up a lot of the allowance.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
Sorry to revive the old thread, but just wanted to add. I don't trust Tripp luggae - I bought a suitcase for one of my trips and it started cracking at the opening in the first trip!!! No wonder I returned it as soon as I got home.
We now got 2 Samsonite hardshells, and wouldn't change them for anything. The have been on quite a few trips and always survived - a few scuff marks, but no more. Only once I had an issue with one of the clasps coming open in Frankfurt airport, and the code was changed, but no problem - went through all 3-number combinations until I found it!
You have to be unlucky if that happend then! Ive had my Tripp case for years and its fantastic! Completly recommend them! (and Ive used Samsonite cases to, my opinion there though is that you pay for the label, much the same as you do with a pair of nike shoes!) Besides, the guarantee with Tripp cases alone means its a bit of a no brainer-if it breaks you get a new one (not the old one fixed!)0 -
Samsonite are good cases, but I'd look at Tripp as well, make your own choice up then!
Tripp have a good sale on at the moment, and they actually sell Samsonite cases anyways-be a good way to compare for yourself.0 -
I have to say that Tripp seems pretty good. Used them once before and have just been back on their site today to look at suitcases for my holiday, they have a 70% discount on at the moment.0

Our two Samsonite hardshell cases have been round the world many, many times and have generally had nothing worse than scuffs. Only one instance of damage: once one of the clasps came open and got smashed up in the baggage system (the case has three clasps and the other two were fine, so it stayed closed). I emailed Samsonite and they sent me a new clasp for free (and this was an 8 year old suitcase)- really excellent service.
Only one downside: they're pretty heavy so they do take up some of your weight alowance. Wouldn't swap them for anything else, though.travelover0 -
When I and the hubby travel back to US to visit family..I also shop alot. We take 2 fabric ones 1 half hardcase and have fabric and then 1 that is a hardcase. We put the more fragile items in the hardcase and anything we are worried about in the other bags we just wrap clothes etc. around them. So far so good for the stuff inside but there have been a few times when we had gotten damaged bags but the airport gave us credit/payment for them with no problem.

Another vote here for Tripp soft sided cases. We brought a set with matching carry on bags and they have survived 4 flights now with no trouble and are almost ready for their 5th.0
