I have a large Samsonite that Emirates gave to me after trashing my trusty American Tourister that lasted over 10 years of heavy travel.
It is very rugged and has been on 22 trips within 2 years with just a few scuffs. It is a normal styled Samsonite suitcase but the handle is of the flight bag style so much easier to manage with me being tall.
Even though they are a little bit more expensive, you do get what you pay for in SamsoniteI'm going for my QuidCo £million!
Total So Far: £9923.580 -
Our two Samsonite hardshell cases have been round the world many, many times and have generally had nothing worse than scuffs. Only one instance of damage: once one of the clasps came open and got smashed up in the baggage system (the case has three clasps and the other two were fine, so it stayed closed). I emailed Samsonite and they sent me a new clasp for free (and this was an 8 year old suitcase)- really excellent service.
Only one downside: they're pretty heavy so they do take up some of your weight alowance. Wouldn't swap them for anything else, though.0 -
just check the size as virgin have a max size limit, all three sides have to be less than 160cm or something like that
i have 2 soft side antler cases that hubs and i have used for 10 years and other family memebers have borrowed and they are still going strongMSE convert, trying to save the pennies!:T Darling Z born 03/06 and Darling M born 03/09. I make gorgeous boys :T0 -

I recently got a Tripp Graphite express cabin suitcase from Debenhams for £28 including delivery using discount code PW9P (not sure if that code is still valid though).
Was very pleased with it - a bargain.0 -
I appreciate that Phatbear is the pro when it comes to luggage
however I am a fan of hard bodied cases.
Needless to say you get what you pay for and if you go for appearance over functionality you may have issues, but IMHO a non bells and whistles (ie non spinner) hard bodied case from the likes of Carlton, Samsonite, Roncato, etc fits the bill when travelling and will last the pace.
And if I needed cases right now, I'd look no further than EBay where one can pick up a couple of seasoned second hand hard bodied Carlton cases for billy bargain prices.

Sorry to revive the old thread, but just wanted to add. I don't trust Tripp luggae - I bought a suitcase for one of my trips and it started cracking at the opening in the first trip!!! No wonder I returned it as soon as I got home.
We now got 2 Samsonite hardshells, and wouldn't change them for anything. The have been on quite a few trips and always survived - a few scuff marks, but no more. Only once I had an issue with one of the clasps coming open in Frankfurt airport, and the code was changed, but no problem - went through all 3-number combinations until I found it!Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
Another vote for Samsonite hard cases, worth every penny. I don't know where you live but there is a Samsonite factory store at Cheshire Oaks near Ellesmere Port where you can get them at a discount. Mine have been on two round the world trips and at least another 30+ trips in the last 15 years between us and the people we've loaned them to. They are pretty scruffed but going strong. However they are heavy which you should consider if you have trouble packing light!0

We've had 2 Carlton hard shell cases since 1993 when we did a month long trip to the Far East and Australia.
They have travelled 1000's and 1000's of miles as we go away 3-4 times a year, including twice a year to Vegas, and the worst damge they have suffered is a few scuff marks. They are clam shell and have no zips. They do have wheels, but aren't the trolley style as they weren't available when we bought them.
I wouldn't have any other cases.
Yep, we have the Carlton cases too. They have been on many aeroplanes and coaches and are still unmarked apart from a few scratches.
I now think it is time to change them for the pull up handle type with less weight. The Carlton cases we have weigh 7kg empty:eek:.
I will take a look at the Samonite cases on the web as many people on here recomend them...Thank you.If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
