Cheap International Texting

There seems to be little discussion on the site about how to achieve the cheapest possible texting.

I am going away for four weeks this summer in Eastern Turkey and Georgia - and would like to text my girlfriend as I go so that she knows I am safe.

I already have a sim4travel cardd, but at 40p per text I was rather hoping I might get something cheaper.

Anyone had any experience with 10text.co.uk?

Thanks

    I had a look at www.10ptext.co.uk

It won't really be 10p per text because you'll have to pay data charges on top of that. It just sends your message over the internet. I've not looked but I won't be surprised if there's a free way of doing this somewhere (free excluding data charges). It would probably be cheaper to send a quick email from your phone.
  • Thats a good point - where do I look for email usage on the phone?

Fish text looks good but I can't see any information as to how much data is used up when you send a text. Without knowing this is impossible to work out how much it will cost when you're abroad. In theory it should not be very much at all though.

It will depend on your phone and network how to set up email usage on your phone. You can acess services like hotmail but that will probalby use up a lot of data. It would be best to set up a direct email account with POP3/SMTP rather than using a web-based one. I've not tried doing this before.

I would second fishtext. In my experience each sms uses about 1p - 2p of data while using it with my tmobile UK sim.

I have used smsbug, mobisms, and fishtext on several phones. Treo750 (touch screen), Moto q9h, and BB 8310. They are all good, however I have settled into using fishtext and mobisms. I have the applets installed on all my phones.

To download the applet, just point your browser to the jad or jar file. Or you can download to a PC and then copy to your phone.
