road angel versus tomtom.. speed camers alerts ?

With my Tomtom one i can get the regular updates to the speed camera information (think it's £19.95 a year subscription).

The Road Angel Plus has the online speed camera alerts ...think it's £3.99 a month .

My query is ... what's the differrence between them ..or are the warnings basically the same ... ie beamed down from the gps , being just a log of where the cameras are ?

I think the Road Angel does have "mobile camera spot" alerts as well ? .

I've got a tomtom but wondering whether the £150+, and monthly subs for Road Angel is worth it .. struggling to see what extra there is .

Does the R. A . actually pick up "live ".. police with radar guns ... police cars with vascar etc ?

thanks.

Yep there's lots of signs out there and they tell you the maximum speed to drive at.

If you're lucky they look like this with the rectangle removed...

If you're not so lucky they look like

Look out for them :D They're there free of charge for your use. Now that has to be money saving compared with paying £3.99 a month.

Hmmm...driver of a particularly nasty Skoda I see.

Anyway, what is 50km? I'm not aware of that speed limit in the UK, with or without tits.

Forget TomTom and Road Angel camera databases, the ones on the website below are far more accurate and complete, including regular mobile sites and roadworks:

To answer some more of the OP's question, without going off topic:

Vascar: undetectable by any method, as there is nothing to detect (other than the pig's trotters).

Radar/laser guns: you need a detector, however these are notoriously unreliable/useless.

The only difference is that the Road Angel Plus has a built in laser detector. I've tried these out and don't find them particularly reliable. This web page explains why they are hit and miss: http://www.radar-detectors.co.uk/radar_detector_technology.asp

Due to the current range of the equipment in the camera vans, it is quite likely that by the time the Road Angel picks up a laser signal, it could already be too late.

Not worth the extra £150 + £49 per year over and above what the OP already owns.

As the OP already has a TomTom, I would recommend paying £20 per year for pocketgpsworld database. I've yet to find one that isn't on the database, including regular mobile locations and roadworks (except brand new ones obviously).

Also, if you are the first person to report a new camera location, you get FREE membership for life (well, 20 years anyway!). I've achieved that, probably due to the amount of driving I do (30k+ per year).

WITHABIX ....... does that mean getting the downloads from pocketgpsworld onto the tomtom ??... if so what exactly do you have to do to make it all happen ?

Scroll down the page in this link until you find your TomTom model in the table:

    http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras

There are links to the instructions and a video on how to do it.

It's quite easy and very easy once you've done it the first time.

  • hi, newbie here.....
I was in a service station on the M6 and saw an advert for the Road Angel. I think the difference here is that your able to alert other drivers of mobile units in an area......
