PC World Question

Hi,
i pay £8 a month to PC World just in case anything happens to my laptop, i have taken advantage of the guarantee once when my laptop would not switch on. but i have now paid double the price that the laptop is worth :(

what do you advise? cancel these payments at my own risk or keep on paying "just in case!"

It depends what you want, really. To be honest, I don't tend to go for these 'extended cover' type things because I personally like new techy stuff every year or so, so if I get the extended cover, it means I almost certainly have to have the tech, whatever it be, for over a year. It's up to you really, but that's my opinion.

Oh yeah, If you hadn't of took the cover, just remember you could of probably replaced the system with a more up to date one with the money you saved from the cover... Just a thought.

PC world try and sell these packages with the computers they sell. I personally wouldnt bother. My last girlfriend worked at PCW and she said that they make the money on insurance/aftersales stuff rather than the PCs themselves.

I don't like extended warranties really.

But, when the laptop failed could you have afforded to replace it or pay the repair bill ??

Entirely up to OP and financial situation really, i wouldn't have it (and dont on any computer i have)

I guess it depends oh how much you value your laptop working? If you had a problem with your laptop how long could you go without it? Is that why you are paying this money?

There are lots of places where you can get computers repaired or help with software etc for a one off fee (geeksquad spring to mind http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/services/remote.aspx?id=1361).

As you have seen, you could have bought two laptops for the price of the cover, which surely proves that things tend to go wrong less often than the people who sell you the cover would like you to believe! Remember that generally you are automatically covered by the sale of good act if something goes wrong due to a fault in the manufacturing of the product. And if it lasts beyond that period then that is a pretty good indication that it should last for a while longer?

I think once you have paid over the value of the product you are trying to cover, then you should stop the payments.

In the future, work out how long the product would have to last to make the cost of cover equal the cost of replacement, then dont get the cover, then when it reaches that point in time, congratulate yourself on saving the extra money!

You should also bear in mind that any PC/Laptop will devalue greatly on a monthly basis.
What costs £300 at purchase could be bough for half that a year later in many cases.

Having said that, at £8 a month, I can't see how the OP has paid double the price of their laptop. Sub £400 lappys have only been in PC world for 3/4 years at most. 2 years ago for sub £300. So unless they paid £700 14 years ago I think they might either be exaggerating or have given duff info.

Laptops get cheaper and you could end up buying a new one anyway in a couple of years. With warranty cover, you have 1 year at least - places like dell can give you extra year cover for less cost than £8 (one of payment).

Thanks for all the replies, I am going to cancel the warranty. what scares me is as soon as my sister cancelled hers, her laptop screen dropped and smashed. i've also had a few accidents with old laptops!!

I had the laptop for 6 months when it would not turn on, PC World told me the guarantee is for a month only, then after that i would have to pay any costs myself, so at the time i was glad i had the cover!

    :)
