Thanks for all the replies, I am going to cancel the warranty. what scares me is as soon as my sister cancelled hers, her laptop screen dropped and smashed. i've also had a few accidents with old laptops!!

I had the laptop for 6 months when it would not turn on, PC World told me the guarantee is for a month only, then after that i would have to pay any costs myself, so at the time i was glad i had the cover!

    :)
    That's a load of &^*^%

Sale of Goods act guarantees purchases for a reasonable time. Generally up to a year without problems after that they tend to argue a lot more. Problem is that PCW are one of the worst at repairing things when you don't have their warranty, that's why I would generally avoid the place.

So they lied to you to get you take out the cover and you've paid twice the cost of the laptop with no benefit as you would have been entitled to a free repair anyway.

That is appalling customer service and sadly it sounds as if PCW have lied to you and fleeced you.

If a laptop was dropped, like your sisters, and smashed I would be investigating my insurance policy for a claim on that front.

If you have had a few accidents then perhaps you should look at different ways of working with laptops. What sort of "accidents" have you had in the past?

so, i was lied to? i told the sales assistance i was not interested in the warranty, but he told me i'm only covered for a month!!

he spoke me into it for about 10 minutes!!!

accidents in the past? viruses that ruined the performance of the laptop and also my niece spilled water all over my old one then it failed to work.

but, now children are not allowed on this one.

cant believe i was lied to :(

    That is absolutely not true.
Assuming that your recollection is correct and you correctly understood what he was saying, then you were lied to.

Also, beware that if your item comes with the normal year's warranty, then the so-called "three year" extended warranty is really for an extra two years after the included one expires.

I never take out extended warranties since my dealings with Sky about 10 years ago.
I took out the extended warranty when I signed up with them and, after a couple of years, the ariel dish shifted out of line line during a gale. When I called them they said that the dish wasn't covered - only the box! GRRRRR!

I have never taken out an EW since. Also, after realising that a three year warranty is actually a two year warranty because of the original one-year cover by the manufacturer, they are expensive. If I took out EWs on all the equipment I buy, my monthly outgoings would be such that I couldn't afford to buy any more new items!

I read somewhere, a few years ago, that some insurance companies will give maintenance cover on electrical equipment at much better rates than the ones offered by retailers - I don't know whether that is till the case, though. I've not come across it lately.

What a surprise: PC World lying to a customer to fleece them with an extended warranty.

They should be reported for lying to sell a product, I'm sure watchdog or trading standards would take a keen interest.

Avoid this shop and their extended warranties at all costs.

PS If you drop and smash a laptop, poor a drink over it etc, providing you have accidental cover on your home contents insurance (not that expensive to add), you are fully covered too.
