2gb memory it was £379 but is reduced to £349 , might be worth looking at instead of upgrading memory

    Have a look at Bigpockets.
They have quite a range of refurbished laptops, including well known brands like Dell, IBM, HP, etc, from £144.99 with delivery included.
I bought a IBM T42 for £180 from there a few weeks ago... slightly grubby, cleaned up as good as new.
    Their coloured Dells may appeal.

KeithP, you beat me to it :D

Got my mini-Guns T41s from BP for xmas, bargain at £165 each....

edit: just looked, all the Thinkpads have sold out (suprise, suprise)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • You can see they are trying to sell you a pile of crap when it says this
"The laptop comes with a fantastic software pack! Including:
      [*]Adobe Reader for reading PDFs"

Adobe Reader is free and always has been.

no to eMachines, please, can you afford an Apple Mac. Start her of on the right foot for life

If the OP has less than £300 to spend, I very much doubt it.

(though, you can pick up a MacBook on eBay for about £300 if you know what you're looking for).
    • What is it needed for?

Is it for keeping up with her mates on face book or doing school work?

If its just for email/internet, then go for a webbook/netbook or whatever they're called, small screen, small keyboard, cheap, portable, usually in pink but no good for essay writing, school work etc

If you want one for school/education then you really need a proper sized one.

I bought my OH a (proper sized) Dell Inpsiron 1525 with 1.8GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, new with 12months warranty for £300 on Ebay. A bit nervous buying on Ebay but its a great machine.

If it is for school, you will probably want to get MS office as well, this will set you back about £60 from Amazon. I personally use open office but I have heard people say its no good for education.

I am an engineer and use it for working on word/excel documents at home, then take them back to work again, I don't really understand why its no good for education, but I don't know enough about it so would go for Microsoft version.
Mortgage £120K, monthly overpayment £600, 18 years and £100K saved

      Thanks for all your replies.
Just to answer a couple of questions, she will be using it for school work and the internet, also playing her music and DVD's. so will need a dvd player.

Getting some speakers and headphones to go with whatever we buy.

Having a look at my options now, looking at the idea's/links posted so far.
