Hi, I'm looking for a laptop for my daughters birthday, have seen this one at Asda http://direct.asda.com/Emachines-Laptop/000584169,default,pd.html?cm_sp=electricals-_-department-banner-_-toprated_3

I know I will need to upgrade the RAM, but apart from that

Her birthday is this Friday, so I need to act soon, any ideas ?.

Needs to be sub £300

thanks

  • As a basic laptop, it'll do just fine. Does seem to get favourable reviews from other buyers.

As it's only Vista Basic, the RAM will probably do just now.

You could get a dell for 299 or even less for the mini laptop.
Never heard of emachines, so I would recommend known brand.

yikes, I wouldn't recommend emachines at all. I have an emachines laptop and faults just kept arising. It got to a point where I just went out and bought an Acer aspire 5050 for myself.

Because of urgency, I recommend you go to somewhere like PC world and look at the discounted ones near the front of the shop. They are often reduced because the box has been opened, they are ex-display or maybe a USB cable is missing or something. We got a family member a bright pink Acer laptop this way, which was actually about £300 (cheaper than normal) and came with Office 07 and she really liked it!

2gb memory it was £379 but is reduced to £349 , might be worth looking at instead of upgrading memory

They have a number of refurbished laptops listed on their web site, starting at ~£250. They also sell the Dell Mini 10 in a variety of colours for ~£300.

Be careful when purchasing: they're sneakily trying to add Norton 360 to every order.

eMachines is an Acer brand ;)

    See http://www.emachines.com/corporate/background.html
........In October 2007, eMachines was acquired by Taiwan-based Acer Inc.

Go to places like PC World and Cuirrys to view laptops until you find one you like then buy online as you'll save, Laptops Direct are good.

An affordable Mac? I've never heard of such a thing!

As for that Elonex ONEt, it's sadly no better than the original Eee PC. There's also something rather worrying in the product description:
Please Note that the ONEt+ does not support flash. Flash is used to stream animation and some video's on websites. This will result in certain websites that use flash not displaying correctly e.g YouTube.
