dream ticket sri lanka

This company is offering holidays cheaper than a flight ticket. Anybody had any experiences with them? My family of two adults and children aged 13 and 17 (4 adults on holiday really!) want to go to Sri lanks for 3 weeks during the school summer holidays.

I would love to hear of your views and experiences.

I have been to Sri Lanka several times and it is a fantastic country. The food is delicious and the people are very friendly. 3 weeks is a good amount of time to spend there as you will be able to see the whole country. Enjoy!

Now is possibly not the best point in time to attempt to see the whole country! :(

True, if I were the OP I would check with the FCO website which is advising against travel in quite a number of areas of Sri Lanka

But not the areas that TO's send their customers to! Sri Lanka is quite safe for British tourists, I'd fly out there tomorrow if I could.
  • we went to sri lanka last december - it was incredible. we stayed at club hotel dolphin in waikkal which i can definitely recommend. i have to say the deals are much better now than when we went and there are so many hotels on holiday websites to choose from whereas we only had a few

    From the FCO website:

There is a high threat from terrorism in Sri Lanka. Fatal attacks have become more frequent. They have occurred in Colombo and throughout Sri Lanka, including in places frequented by expatriate and foreign travellers. Further attacks may occur at any time. There is an increasing risk of British nationals being caught up in an attack.

I wouldnt risk it especially if I was taking my children........

I'm fully aware of FCO advice for travel to Sri Lanka but thank you for clarifying the matter.

I should like to add this: in 25 years of the current conflict I'm fairly sure that just one tourist (possibly not even British) has been slightly injured as a result of having been near an attack that took place. If you are going to let the threat of terrorism affect your travel plans, then, statisticallly speaking, you are safer in Sri Lanka than you are in London.

Everyone views risks differently and thats fine, I was just trying to add a little perspective here; and for the record - perhaps people ought to be avoiding Spain and Turkey too (information copied from the FCO website):

    Spain

There is a high threat from terrorism in Spain. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Recent attacks attributed to ETA have taken place near Bilbao in the north and Malaga and Torremolinos in the south of Spain. See the Terrorism section of this advice for more details.

    Turkey

There is a high threat from terrorism in Turkey and a number of terrorist groups remain active in the country. Terrorist attacks are regularly carried out against the security forces in the south east of the country by the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). We advise against all but essential travel in the provinces of Hakkari, Sirnak, Siirt and Tunceli and visitors should remain vigilant when travelling in other provinces in south eastern Turkey. Terrorist attacks have also taken place against both government and civilian targets in major cities such as Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara, and tourist resorts on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Improvised explosive devices (IED's) have been placed in crowded areas, restaurants, refuge bins, outside banks and hotels and on dolmus mini-buses and trains.

If anyone is thinking of holidaying in Sri Lanka then just go and have an amazing time - it's a stunningly beautiful country ;)

Looks like there may be a change as they have cleared out the terrorists. We were there in december 2007 and didnt have any problems, our driver used to make sure our "european faces" could be seen at army checkpoints & we were never stopped (well only once when a soldier wanted the test score). We toured all of the main touristy bits, ma manager is going in july & would go back tomorrow. The place was far safer than most uk cities even then.
