I haven't started thinking about xmas shopping yet, but have warned family it will not be like previous years and presents going on for hours! When i challenged them to remember 5 presents they got last year - they couldn't! They're pretty good really and they get quite nice gifts from other family so will not do too badly, we have a real family xmas and enjoy the dinner and the games they get!0

This is a great idea and I'm going to start one as we don't have much left on our mortgage due to merging two houses into one when we got married in May 2004. mr kateab is a bit of a fritterer and is forever leaving spare change everywhere as men only can! I am already overpaying a bit as our payment is in double figures but it's not enough to speed up the payment term significantly (I know, it all helps!).
We must have coffees out about once a week atm but then I spose it's instead of going to the pub as we have 2 children under 2 so nights out are somewhat curtailed.Even if we cut back on those a few times, it must make a difference.
Rarely sell stuff on Ebay but I have been selling unwanted/no longer used baby equipment and clothes at NCT Nearly New Sales which is less hassle than posting stuff all over the place and it helps to raise funds for the charity so I'll have to put the proceeds in from those. I made £88.88 at the last one (tho I did sell a double buggy) and have another one on Saturday where I hope to make at least £20.
That's £100 towards an overpayment to get us started! I like this idea.
kateabDefinitely NOT the blogger at Katie and the Kids, OK?0 -
Welcome kateab = good luck with your sale!0

Hi Folks
I have come to the conclusion that I am never going to be able to make the kind of savings everyone else seems to make :rotfl:
We moved house 2 yrs ago so everything I could sell I did so I can't ebay or bootsale. We need to get wills made, put in place income protection/insurance/assurance and sort out some form of pension for both of us apart from state as it's not going to be worth anything when we both retire and then of course xmas is coming :rotfl: :rotfl:
However starting in January I will change the working families tax credit from my account to dhs and any savings from the monthly grocery challenge will get left in the account that alone should total £270 to £300 a month so I'm quite pleased with that.
Percy pig will be keep eating his silver and that will be holiday money along with pigsback leisure vouchers and tescos vouchers.
My £2 coins I'm not sure but will probably be paid into the morgage as well when golli reaches a £50 total.
All in all I think that's it :rotfl: :rotfl:MFiT Member No 85

Whatever you pay cuts down on the interest and the mortgage term - don't be too hard on yourself!0

Kiwi88,don't worry about what you say is a little overpayment in comparison to others. Its not a competition (!), we all have different incomes/outgoings/lives in general. We should all be proud of what we are achieving, as halloween queen says, every bit counts. 1p of the mortgage is 1p of the mortgage plus interest reduced.
I am sometimes only paying off an extra £10 a month, but its better than nothing! This thread is my source of inspiration, and i look at others who are paying off loads or have such small mortgages enviously, but if we all keep chipping away and motivating ourselves via here, one day it will be us with the small mortgage, large overpayments, inspiring other newcomers.
hooray for this thread and the inspirational people adding to it!:TMortgage free 04/03/2025. Thanks to this site and lots of overpayments bit by bit.
Next stop: house repairs, holiday fund, replace our very old cars, more financial security/early retirement savings.🤞0 -

How on earth did I not find this before.. ???
I want a pig.. I want a pig!!!!
I currently have a biscuit tin full of change and a bowl on my bedside cupboard.. but a pig is so much more fun!!
I shall add one to my christmas list.. one more thing for hubby to buy me... *grin* ok I'll have to wait a few weeks for him but.. I've waited this long!
How often do you all empty your piggies? Just when they are full or once a month?? Or once a year??
Gosh I am MOST Excited about receiving a big pig for christmas!!

Another question.. (probably be answered alreayd but excuse my not reading through 43 pages of posts!!)
How do you all make the payments off your mortgage?
I pay via bank payment once a month and getting money in the bank means a trip into town.. thoguh I am considering opening an account at the local bank so that would be easier.. but complex and I don't even know if they would give me an account (we wrote off £14k with them after having a house repossessed a few years back and £400 of accounts.. hmmm might try a different bank lol)
I'm just a bit confused how the payments thing woudl work without it being swallowed by other things like the overdraft.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Piggy!!
Am so glad you are treating the subject of paying off your mortgage with the correct amount of gravitas :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I don't want to upset you, but you will need to come up with a name and I am afraid 'Piggy' is already taken.....
Ha - wiped the smile of your face :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: !!!!! Still, weeks to go to come up withn something suitable!
The easiest way is to do overpayments over the internet - is that an option with your bank and whoever your mortgage is with? Or will they accept payment by phone by debit card? Also, how often is interest calculated on your mortgage? If daily, every second counts, if monthly not so bad, if annual then you are faced with the trauma of finding the best savings account to store it in    ...
See, lots to decide.....
my pig is called peefer by the way (p for pig - you can see there is a v high standard of names on here :rotfl: :rotfl: ) - lots of us have cute ones from pigsback.com.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Edinburghlass, you posted a picture somewhere of Pablo Pigs at Epcot (think thats the name of them), we are going to Epcot this afternoon and I was wondering where you get them from?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
