The wireless is setup per computer/laptop for a specific network - in your case I guess you set it up to connect to your own router at your own home.
If you want to use it at your friends place, you need to set up a new wireless connection by going through control panel network connections.
Your intermittent stop start could be just xp - or your hard disk performance. Mind you if you recently got sp2, it might be SP2 updates causes issues but they should resolve themselves with more updates.
The freezing sounds like more of an issue with network setup though - if a browser (such as IE) finds network loses internet connection it usually does its own thing trying to work out what happened - usually your internet connection is the problem.
You might try wired internet connection to narrow down the problem.
PS - Make sure you have correct and upto date drivers for all your hardware including the network drivers.0 -
i have updated all the drivers and set up connection at friends house. it just keeps giving me this message when i put wepkey in the network password needs to be 40 bits or 104 bits depending on your network configuration. this can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters. yet password has not been changed and i had my other laptop working perfectly there.back to service pack 2 do u think it is worth installing it again and perserveringegtting all the other updates after it will probably take a few days cos of the freezing issues0

Are you selecting the right network connection to use when you are at your friends house?
i.e. if you have two wireless connections, disable one and use the right - otherwise it will try to pick up the wrong one and do what you say.
Its worth trying to work out the problem. Linux systems like debian / ubuntu allow you to select the correct network if you move around. Windows does have the same thing - you have to click on the network icon in the tray and choose correct one to connect to.0 -
yes definately choosing my friends network like i said i have done it before without any problems it just seems too be on this machine altho when i had linux on here and before i upgrade the ram i connected with no problems at her house i have got all the upgrades off the acer site without any problems i am wondering whether i need too update my bios as that is the only thing i have not done as i have never updated bios on a comp before and wanted too know if that could be the problem before i actually do it0

Hi
(1) Am hoping someone could help me i recentley upgraded my aspire one 110-ab too 2gig memory also took linux off it and installed xp. works a treat except i have problems with service pack 2 the comp just freezes randomley no errors or anything just freezes for about 15 secs then starts then freezes again

(1) If your windows xp keeps freezing it usually means an incompatibility issue. Usually this can be a wealth of problems but usually points towards a bad driver. Have you gone to the acer website and downloaded the xp drivers?
If all fails I always suggest you to carry out a clean install. Wipe and format the hard drive again. New install.
(2) Network? You will the SSID from your friends house and the network password. That is all. Without this you will not be able to access this. It will be a number of letters and numbers. i.e. usually WEP key is they have never changed this.Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'
Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

Its not bios.
Well it does sound as though your connection is not set up properly.
Assuming that you are trying to connect to a router at your friends place, you need to ensure you are using the correct security as configured on that router, WEP, WPA etc. If you have assumed it to be WEP and its not what the router expects, you wont get the connect.
So I suggest you work out how the router is configured and what it is expecting.0 -
when i put the xp on there is no freezing the freezing only starts with service pack 2 from the windows update site0

How about going up to sp3 - go the whole hog - its worth keeping upto date.0
