Skinty - if it was me based on what you said I'd go for Number 1.

Seems to have more experience of different types of birth, she's had more children so understands each pregnancy can be different, she's going to be more knowledgable as she's been on more courses and is cheaper so very MSE :money:

Hi - I wanted an opinion (not medical advice, Mrs Tine). I think my DD has got Chicken pox. I called the out-of-hours doctor because althought she only had around 10 spots on her body, she seems to have a very blistery foof (poor thing). Anyway, they say it sounds like chicken pox but that they are more worried about me (I'm 31+3) than her and that I need to go to the GP for anti-viral somethings - I had chicken pos when I was 16 (that was yuckky yuck) - do I really need to go and subject us both to sitting in the GP surgery waiting to be seen? Woudl you bother going? My friend pregnant with twins had her DD with chicken pox and I don't think she was told to go to the GP for herself...what do you think?

Skinty - can I just ask why you are having a Doula? You might have mentioned it before, and I have missed it. Just interested to know why as never known anyone to have one before. Will your OH be at the birth?

For information, CRB checks are non-transferrable. Just because someone has a clear Disclosure for 1 position, doesn't mean they would be clear for another position as enhanced level checks can disclose non-conviction information that is only relevant to a particular role/post. Not that I am suggesting that Doula number 1 has anything to hide!!! It's just a misconception that having 1 clear disclosure means that there is no information held on you!

Sorry, off on a tangent there!

efrieze - you can get it more than once so please go to your GP.
When you get there ask to be put in a side room while you wait in case there are any other pg ladies there.
I have been vaccinated against chickenpox but still wouldn't take the risk.

Fitzio - we are watching thru Freeview but keeps jumping every now and then!

    Hi efrieze

I phoned the doc about dodgy spots today and she was very keen to see me in case it was Chicken Pox. Said she was very glad that it wasn't but didn't elaborate on what would have happened if it was. I'm 23 weeks. She also said if I get any more, different or if the exisiting ones get any worse to go back in case things changed. So its probably better to go and be reassured than to sit and wonder if you should have gone.

I was quite pleased she had it at all as doulas don;t usually get DRB checks - I think it shows a certain level of Ok-ness!

Why do I want a doula? Well, OH will be at the birth but I don;t expect him to be able to do much for me as he hasn;t really read any books, and I imagine he will be more of a hand-holder.

I want a doula so she can explain to me what is happening, and help me understand anything the MW might say or want to do by asking the question I'd normally ask myself but might be a little too busy to ask!

i also want one to help keep the MW to my birth plan as much as possible, as I want to avoid intervention and going into hospital as much as I can, barring emergenices.

They also visit you after the bith to help you with breastfeeding which I think will be very helpful as my family live 100 miles away, and really provide a continuous support during the birth period from 38 weeks to 42 weeks.

Because they have trained, they tend to have read up on all the different methods which is especially important to me because I want a really natural birth and therefore I want my supporter to know at least as much as I have taught myself from reading, which Oh hasn;t.

So I guess it's to be a cross between a MW (doulas are not medically trained though) and my OH, and also to support my OH as he may find it all gets a bit much but this way he can have a break without me being left on my own.

skinty if it was me i would go for the first lady, she has had 4 births herself and knows how different that each can be, she also has told you about her ins and courses that she has done. have you not thought about having your mum their instead???
