Thanks Lynz. I get this now and again in various forms. I think it's a particular poster who has something against me who chimes in with a bunch of abusive posts using a few identities and then goes away again.
It was quite fun having the argument the first couple of times but it's getting dull now.
On a more positive note, it was a glorious day here today and I'm having an lovely evening watching England dismantle the Windies. Oh and my physio has told me I can start cycling again next week which is very good news (although it's going to be a world of pain).
Im glad to hear you can start cycling again. Its really nice to know you are happy there. Its fair to say anyone who jabs in for your happiness is either jealous or a whinging pom.
England is full of those sort of people, the sort of people who call you a swot for doing well in exams or say "what are you using long words for, trying to show off?" Its the worst thing about this country, if some people have nothing positive to say, they just let thier own weaknesses and bitterness flow through.
Ive been out down the southbank this morning, and although the weather was a bit rainy, went for a lovely walk me, the OH and the dog. Was lovely:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Thanks again. TBH, things have been pretty tough over here for me but I'll be glad to get back in the saddle and work is going ok (even if the job isn't my first choice).England is full of those sort of people, the sort of people who call you a swot for doing well in exams or say "what are you using long words for, trying to show off?" Frankly there's a fair bit of that in Aus too. Over here it's known as 'Tall Poppy Syndrome'.
The Thames Path is one of the things I really miss about England. I cycled the length of it a few years back. The bit once you get past Henley is one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Tower Bridge to Richmond Park used to be a regular training ride for me.0 -

True. There are limits though otherwise the forum just becomes a mass slagging off and it just becomes pointless as people are there for the fight.0 -
To get back to the debate
.
How many new builds do we need?
The devastation of the UK High Street over last year and the next few should provide plenty of opportunities for reconversions of shop premises into flats.
Near me there were three boarded up shops - and that was before the introduction of a Tesco Express which will probably see off another two.
Then the recession will mean loads of people living at home or sharing with friends - as well as the speculators selling up. It could result in better use of the existing housing stock.0 -
Why do we need lots of new builds? Has there been a sudden population explosion that I'm not aware of?0

On the plus side, a few of you lot have become dear to me, not least Generali, whose good humour and perseverance at an incredibly difficult juncture in his life has been tremendous. Trying something new, somewhere new is brave and comendable.0 -
I have family in Perth, Australia, and to be honest, much of it is just like a council estate full of barret style houses. No character at all.
Although Freemantle etc is very nice
When I lived in Australia in the 80's the sought after houses were the inner-city suburbs where you'd find the 'historic' homes - properties built in the 1800's.
Most of them were semi-detached with wonderful wrought ironwork.
We bought new out in Rowville (Melbourne) but found it soulless so moved further out into the Dandenongs as it was cooler in the summer months.
I would still think you need to have serious money to be able to afford a house with character in Australia.0 -
I walked past a clutch of newbuild flats (is there a collective noun for a group of newbuild apartment blocks I wonder???) the other day and had a quiet chuckle to myself. Phenomenally ugly (I've lived in Warsaw and Croydon, so I know ugly) and in a really unappealing spot- a fair walk from shops/transport and right next door to a lovely scenic industrial estate. It is these kind of places I think of when I feel down about not being able to afford to buy. They are an EYESORES!!!!0
