I must say I did know quite a bit of this already but I was shocked to see
The UK builds the smallest homes in the developed world.

So thats another league we are at the bottom of, along with

    *lgest working hours in Europe
    *angriest people in Europe
*Lowest quality of life for children in Europe

    etc etc
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Some seriously flawed statements there I think. Probably based on Eurovision-style voting.

    * the most desireable country for immigrants to live

    GG
There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.

Why do you think I left?

If you explain to non-British people (who live in developed countries) how the British live then they're flabbergasted.

A 3 bed semi in Brixton for a million Aussie dollars (link) (at the normal exchange rate of GBP1 = AUD2.5). That'll buy you a very nice house indeed in Sydney or alternatively a good solid house in a decent suburb with a decent amount to invest for the future.

No we're not at the bottom we're at the top. We manage to build the smallest homes in the developed world. What an achievement! :D

    >Another example of the failure of John Prescotts iniquitous Pathfinder sheme<

Pathfinder was a byword for greased palms and kickbacks; the company Urban Splash made oodles and their people are thick-as-thieves with NuLabour.

My view of demolishing old property to build shiny new is it displaced poorer people, like ethnic cleansing.

Imagine this: you've lived in the street all your life. House cost you £2-10k between 1970 and 1990. Now it'd be worth £50-60k - the cheapest houses for 400 miles. Along come the "regeneration team", compulsory purchase your house and give you £60k .... then they build shiny places for sale at £120-200k.

Now, you're sat on the kerb with your £60k, staring at the £120-200k houses. You're 50-85. Where are you going to live? You can't buy.

As a teen I had a summer job as an Animatore for foreign student...on coach day trips etc. (was a hugely fun job). Other Europeans often used to ask where our ''old quarters'' were in various towns. I tried to explain we had sort of woven them in in many places, like patching up the old bits with new bits and we rarely had ''old quaters'' and they were genuinely horrified: some other places get it a lot better than us..though ots by no means universally better than us IMO.

    I agree about Pathfinder. Completely.

Not so long ago I went for a recce around Liverpool, hadnt been there for about 5 years, and could not BELIEVE what has happened there. Whole communities, decimated, boarded, with no sign of anything going on.

Theres a really interesting article on the rat & mouse about this point exactly PN - in an estate not far from where I live.
I bought my 4 bedroomed house from the G.L.C.on the Ferrier in 1979 before the right to buy was introduced I was already living on the estate but in a maisonette. My neighbours eitherside have been rehoused as they were council tenants therefore leaving me isolated. The Greenwich council has offered me 94,000.00 if I take this offer I would be unable to buy a property in this area and as I am 70 in July my chances of getting a mortgage is nil.I have been told that they would accept me as a Council tenant this would mean paying rent from my State pension. The council says that they are paying market prices for our properties but as the only sellers since the regeneration was announced 7 years ago is the council in the right to buy scheme there is no market value.

The thought of the Aussie Government going in to some small town somewhere and announcing that they were going to force people to sell their houses on the cheap so they could be bulldozed is pretty funny really. The party that announced the policy would be out of power for a generation.
