    Cable to near nieghbour, wireless access to next door, coffee shops pub and clubs have access for free. But does she have a laptop??

    Yes - but an old !!!!!! one.

    ATM if she needs internet she needs to walk a few miles into town or catch a bus to the library which is less than ideal...

    I have a Virgin mobile PAYG phone and was called up by them a couple of weeks ago and offered the £5 deal, no mention of taking the broadband. I didn't go for it though, so don't know if there would have been any hidden catches.

    Had a look at coverage - it seems it has to be 3 and even then coverage is only "good" at her main place of residence...

    As such it looks like a second-hand pre-paid dongle is the only option - any advise on the cheapest way to get one?

    it doesnt garantee anything. try getting a 3g phone and checking speeds on that

    You are aware that they may not get 3G speeds indoors? Even if they get connected to the internet indoors with a poor signal, internet usage will possibly be painfully slow. :eek:
