Plants for a shady border?

Can anyone suggest some plants which would do well in a shady border please?

We've just moved house and have a patch of border along the side of the house which doesn't seem to get much if any sun. Is there anything we could plant there?

thanks :)

    plants shade

and you'll get loads of suggestions like this one

I'd add Hosta to that list, but you need fierce slug control!

    Hardy geraniums are good here.

Is there anything you can cut down to get more light?

If it gets indirect light most of the day, the lack of direct sun can be worked round.

For edible stuff, Morello cherry, Gooseberries, Black/Red/White currents, Japanese wineberry, Sea Buckthorn and alpine strawberries should do okay. They won't crop as heavily as normal, but should still produce something.

Maybe some of the more shade tolerant herbs too.

its quite hard to get flowery stuff in the shade.
white bleeding hearts look classy and are happy in my shady border.(and the normal pink/white ones of course but the whire flowers seem to shine in the gloom), fuschias, hostas, ferns, lily of the valley. budleja (sp?) grows everywhere and the flowers might get some sun if it gets tall enough! I've got some geraniums that seem to do ok too - the little wild looking pink ones not the smelly bright red ones (i know ones pelargomium really but don't know which lol)

Astilbes and foxgloves seem to do well in the shade in my garden.

I like Astilbes for a shady corner, or for something really pest resistant, a variegated Acuba adds a bit of colour.
