Hi,
I got 5 free tomazing tomato plants from T&M. Problem is, I can't find what type they are-are they bush or cordon tomatoes? Can I grow them in a hanging basket?
Thanks
(Oh-and I have some red cherry and gardeners delight seedlings at the moment getting ready to plant out-but few pots, can I grow them in heavy clay soil or am I better off getting a couple of grow bags?)

Grow them in the black buckets that have flowers in at supermarkets, most of the stores will give them to you free of charge.

Got mine too this morning, they looked so dark/purplish I kept checking the label to see if they were actually tomato plants.

Do i need to stake them though? Thats really what i need to know :D Think they may have to go in ground if not bush tomatoes, as running out of space on the patio! growbags more spacesaving than black buckets&no morrisons or asda nearby unfortunately

they grow tall about 4 to 5 feet dont think grow bag a good idea
    use a small bucket
  • a grow bag is fine, commercial tomato growers use them all the time. use a grow bag, bucket, big pot, or even a plastic box with some holes in the bottom, they will be fine.

Can I bung them in the ground? Obviously after potting on and growing a bit? Or am I better off in pots?

If you have the space, they will do much better in the ground.
Remove the lower leaves , then bury them 'up to their necks'.
They will obviously need staking, and feed weekly with any tomato feed.
Actually, liquid seaweed is a brilliant plant food.

Planted my T&M tomato plants in 5 flower buckets I got free from the Co-op (they were going to throw them away!!). Will stake them when they get a bit bigger.

They should have come with some tomato fertilizer. Mine were a bit blue too! It said on the packaging that it's cos they've been grown very cold to keep them small.
Big thanks to Martin Lewis for helping us start to sort out our finances!!!:A

And thank you to all posters! You're wonderful!
  • If they are a bit blue it is because they are short on nitrogen as they have exhausted all the supplies in the compost - they will have been not feeding them, as it would have caused a growth spurt which would have made them harder to p&p!!

Plant them up then give them a feed in a week or so and they will do fine.

yes thanks guys got mine yesterday and not syre what type I thought they might be for hanging baskets. They are blue as held back in cold conditions to stop growing too much, also why blue.

My seed grown plants now have small toms on them and are 3 foot, the best I have ever had. I've hit on putting them on in conservatory in pots as it's 90 degrees mlost days!
