If you are happy doing your own designing, then I'd recommend diy-kitchens, an online supplier. They have a wide range, good prices and in my experience the units are good quality - fully assembled on delivery not flat pack. The service is also very good. They look at your order properly and if there is anything they think is slightly odd will ring you up. I was doing a refurb rather than an new kitchen so ordered what appeared to be a slightly strange selection of units and doors. A very nice man rang me up to check out that I hadn't made any mistakes (I hadn't but it was nice to be asked). They were also absolutely delightful when I changed my mind about a couple of items after the order had gone in.

I have been looking at this site a lot and think we are going to order Avant White - which range did you order?

we've had an ikea kitchen for about 10 years - still all in one pieced despite lots of abuse from us and hte kids. we bought our appliances, sink and taps from other places though.

will need a new kitchen soon and love the magnet curvy one but can't afford it so it will prob be another ikea one

Is this the curvey one you mean???

If so you can get that kitchen from quite a few places that will be wayyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than magnet!

For fitting my builder reckons that £45 per unit (one cabinet fitted with doors) is the going rate for kitchen fitters.

I fitted a B and Q it kitchen for my daughter about 9 months ago, the gloss cream slab. For the money the quality was ok. She had bought it in one of their half price sales. I'm thinking of putting one in in my house now. Anyone know when or how often the 50% sale for the i.t. range is on. I know that their cook and lewis range is currently half price.

    Hi,

Nolte kitchens are a mid market German manufacturer. They use a standard 16mm thick MFC (Melamine Faced Chipboard) carcase, I think Blum soft close drawer boxes and are destributed in the UK by a company in Sawbridgeworth Hertfordshire.

To be honest it is pretty hard to tell the difference between lots of similar mid market German makes, others are Beckermann, Alno, Wellmann (Intoto in UK), Hacker, Format, Schueller. The list can go on for ages!

I would say if you want something German and a bit different then the premier league German makes would be Bulthaup, Poggenpohl, Rational and Eggersmann. We sell Eggersmann and obviously I think they are the best! This is because Eggersmann are a nice family run business (probably the smallest one to be mentioned here) and they are the only German manufacturer to use a 20mm thick MFC carcase and you do really see the improvement in terms of quality, I feel compared to all the rest.

    Anyway, good luck.

Putting aside flexibility in German kitchen unit sizes, would you say a mereway kitchen is better, in terms of build quality?

Hi Mackiem, I would probably say that Merway have got the slight edge on build quality terms over all German makes except Eggersmann. This is basically due to the carcase thickness (All normal German makes 16mm, Eggersmann 20mm, Mereway 19mm).

I feel at the moment value for money Mereway produces the best kitchen you can buy, but if you want something extra special in a bespoke colour or a special wood then German it has to be.

If you are having fitters in, get to know in advance

    1. Where the hot & cold indoor stopcocks are
    2. Where the outdoor stopcock is

will save you and them time!
  • My lessons learnt.....

    1) Lay the floor tiles before the base units go in.
    2) Meausure how high your wall tiles are going to be, before the electrician fits the wall electrical sockets.
    3) Make sure your electrician can draw a straight line. Our spot lights are wonky!
    4) Make sure the appliance codes on your quote/sales agreement are the ones you are getting! We got something different.

I might come back if I think of some more....
