I stopped reading your post after the 1st paragraph...

She drove within the law by stopping when the lights went to amber.

If you have time to think "Oh i'll make it thru..." then you have time to think "Oh i'd better stop..."

You went into the back of her car. Your fault 100%

Also may I add that when i'm approaching traffic lights and they are on amber, silly as it seems but I sometimes hope that the car behind goes into the back of me. Specially if they have been tailgating me for the last 1/2 mile or so.

    Hi all,

Basically it all occured as the queue of cars approached the traffic lights, as this was green,

If the lights are green that means they will go to amber next.

It's a bit worrying that someone who has passed a driving test even needs to ask.

    "Inappropriate emergency stop"? Purleeeeezzz ...

Are your tyres legal? Skidding while braking would suggest possibly not.

Screams panic to me, or "oh !!!! it stopped" mode.

Even the grippiest tyre on the stickiest road will skid if you stamp hard enough on the brakes. It's just a matter of how the factors balance. You would not expect to skid during normal (or even energetic!) driving, but the situation was not really normal.

Mind you, a properly executed emergency stop does NOT mean stamping on the brakes as hard as you can. It should be judged to stop as quickly as possible, without skidding, and you're supposed to release slightly if the wheels lock up.

    Hi all,

I need people's advice on a car accident that happened this morning as iv not been involved in a car accident before.

Basically it all occured as the queue of cars approached the traffic lights, as this was green, the car in front was travelling at a speed with intention to continue through. When the traffic lights turned to amber, again the car infront continued or even slightly accelerated to pass through.

I continued thinking that I'll also be able to pass through fine on Amber and not on Red. I left a safe distance between my car and the car infront and was probably doing between 15 and 20 mphs. Anyway all of the sudden the women in the car infront slammed her breaks and made what I can only say as an emergency stop even though the traffic light was still at amber when she performed her stop.

Anyway i reacted to this by following suit with my emergency stop however considering the wet conditions, my wheels locked and I skidded into the end of her vehicle.

Now i have no damages to my car other than a broken reg plate, and she was left with some bumps.

Can someone tell me who is liable here? am I wrong to dispute that even tho I rear ended her, I should not be fully responsible for her inappropriate emergency stop?

Many thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

If the woman you hit was like me she could now be paralised from the neck down, all because you are a idiot who shouldnt be allowed on the roads.

I have 2 slipped discs in my neck and I drive very carefully because any new injury could by catastrophic to my health but with idiots like you it dosnt matter how good a driver I am if the roads are full of people like you.

I do hope that this op is a troll or wind up merchant, if its real I am afraid, very afraid.

sorry anewman i dont agree with this. even nice new tyres will skid in the wet, even with abs. i remember my old vito,my god were the brakes on that thing frightening, they either took ages to stop you or they locked up completely, replaced all discs and pads every 10k miles, they were shockingly bad.
