All banks will grab whatever money they can in bank charges at the first opportunity. The key is not to spend money that isn't in your account in the first place.
I agree, a deposit and several DD's are setup for the same day, deposit was delayed. My fault for cutting it so fine.
  • What a stupid, ridiculous comment - this charging structure was in place before Santander purchased A&L.
OK, perhaps I should do more research before making a blanket accusation and I take back my comment about the Spanish, but this is how it seemed to the uninitiated.

I was charged £1.50 for o/d fees a few months ago. Whilst knew there was a day or two where I was o/d for part of the day (becuase the consider outgoing before incomings), none of the daily balances showed a o/d balance.

When I called, the call handler agreed he couldn't understand why I was charged and said he would get the specialist department to look into it.

A week later I got a letter saying they were looking at it. Another week or two later, I got a letter saying they have reviewed my account in detail, in full and took all considerations into account. They concluded the charges stand and the charge was fair blah blah and if I wanted debt advice blah blah...

A couple months later I called again. Ever so politely, I explained the situation and asked quite simply "show me where I went o/d?".

A few head scratching moments later, the call handler agreed with me again and said he would credit the £1.50 straight away.

I got my £1.50 back in the end!

So from the comments on this thread I conclude that if bank charges are brought down to a lower amount people will still not be happy? Its £2/£1.50 not the end of the world and if there staff cannot tell you how it is (ie Debits before Credits) then it's their own fault but really is it worth complaining when you know the chances of the computer being wrong are slim?

    Yes i'm serious

The number of people that question the interest a computer has calculated and it is almost always the computer that is right. Also the computer doesn't suddenly decide it will charge people because it feels like it, it is likely to be as others have mentioned that debits come out before the credits go in so although not obvious the computer recognises this and the charge is applied correctly whether or not a human then incorrectly refunds is a different matter.

Computers are never wrong, they simply do what they are programmed to do, so ultimately if it makes "a mistake", it's because a human made a mistake when they programmed it

Systems can fail, data can get mangled during transmission from one place to another... there are non-human causes of errors being made by computers.
